New plot showing the decline of fossil gas in CA For 7 days straight, fossil gas has met only 3-5.6% of demand. Gas down 62% in '26 v '23 WWS has provided a record 58.8% of demand in '26 so far. 92 of 93 and 158 of 183 (86.3) days in 2026 with WWS > 100% of demand for an avg of 5.4 h/day.
Phenomenal! Fossil gas has supplied only 3-5.6% of CAISO electricity each of the last 6 days, all in summer, and only 13.6% of electricity in all of 2026, DOWN 62% versus 2023. Meanwhile, solar is up 54.4%, wind is up 16%, and batteries are up 337% in '26 v '23.
Ho hum, only 89 of the last 90 days and 155 of 180 in 2026 with WindWaterSolar > 100% of demand on the CAISO grid, now averaging 5.3 h/d among all days. 58.6% of all demand met by WWS in '26. Gas down 61.3% in '26 v '23 and has supplied less than 4% of all demand for the last three days.

In 2008, skeptics claimed more than 20% variable renewables on a large grid was not possible. In 2017, they backtracked to 80%. And then to 90%. Then 95%. Once it became obvious that 100% renewables is possible, now they say, "not everywhere is like California" and "what about nighttime?"

Consistent, reliable, incredible. 3.5 years (2023-mid 2026) of WindWaterSolar production versus demand on CAISO grid. Not a single 3-day period with very low WWS, dispelling the myth that WWS will result in a week with no electricity, so long-duration storage is needed.
More crazy records in CA June 20 was a day not only with the highest WindWaterSolar as % of demand ever (164.6%), thus a day with the min net load ever (-9.2 GW), but also a day with the most hours WWS>100% of demand (10.33 h) in 2026 Plus, fossil gas supplied only 3.1% of demand.

Despite ~400,000 new EVs and ~200,000 new heat pumps in California during the past year and the 3rd-most data centers in the U.S., demand has hardly changed since 2025 and decreased 1.3% versus 2023, largely due to the growth in roof PV. Roof PV reduces grid demand for electricity.
