The deadline to register to vote in the Manchester Mayoral Election is today, 23.59. With Reform out of the race voters can now vote Green with the confidence that their vote will not let Reform in On the other hand if you don’t vote Green Labour will get in, which is almost as bad.

Acting against strip searching women in Georgia 8/n

After months of public pressure, protests and legal action, the Georgian Ministry of Justice announced it would end the humiliating practice of fully stripping detainees during body searches.
The decision followed a lawsuit from the Public Defender in February, a report from Amnesty International condemning the practice as degrading and unlawful, as well as a video featuring Georgian artist and activist Kristina Botkoveli, who was subjected to a forced strip search, harassment, and threats after participating in protests.

An Argentine private health insurer was fined over $4,000 USD for denying a legal abortion to a woman whose pregnancy posed serious health risks — a clear violation of the country's reproductive rights law.
Amnesty International Argentina provided legal advice and stressed that rulings like this reinforce the need to guarantee access to legal abortion as a right, not an exception subject to individual or institutional discretion.

Release of Hawa Hunt in Sierra Leone 6/n

Sierra Leone
Hawa Hunt, a reality TV star, was freed from detention on 4 March and cleared of all the cybercrime related charges against her. She was arrested on live television in December 2024 and charged with insulting the President and First Lady in a social media video.
Amnesty International called on authorities to release her and to ensure her rights were upheld.
Her daughter Alicia said: "In one of the very few phone calls I was able to have with my mother as she was in jail, I told her how Amnesty International spoke up for her. She and our whole family were very touched by the support. We believe it played a very key role in her being released."

R*pe conviction in Brazil 5/n

In a landmark ruling for women's rights in Latin America, a Brazilian court convicted actor Juan Darthés of sexual violence against Argentine actress Thelma Fardin, who accused him in 2018 of abusing her when she was 16. Amnesty provided support for transport related costs, and psychosocial support for Thelma throughout her case. The sentence sets an important precedent for sexual violence cases in the region.
After a five-year legal battle across three countries, Thelma stated: "Today I can look my 16-year-old self in the eye and say we did it."

Helping women’s organisations fight GBV in Algeria 4/n

Algeria
Thanks to sustained advocacy work from Amnesty International Algeria and several national women's rights organizations, Algeria's president Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a series of concrete measures to combat violence against women - moving from commitment to action.
The Ministry of Solidarity has since launched a national toll-free helpline, available 24/7 across the country, enabling victims to report abuse, be referred to appropriate support services, and receive emergency assistance when in danger. It is already proving effective. A Guide for Women Victims of Violence has been published in Arabic and English and is currently being distributed nationwide. New legal measures, including the possibility of issuing an immediate restraining order against perpetrators of violence, have also been announced.

Release of Mother Dorgelesse Nguessan. 3/n

Dorgelesse Nguessan was released on 16
January after spending more than four years in prison for participating in a protest. The hairdresser and single mother had never been politically active yet joined a protest after growing concerned about the high cost of living. She was charged with insurrection, tried by a military court and sentenced to five years in prison on 7 December 2021.
I thank those who directly or indirectly work for your organization and contributed to my release.
Dorgelesse Nguessan
Dorgelesse was part of Amnesty International's 2022 Write for Rights campaign, where thousands of supporters called for her release. Amnesty also provided short-term relief support to assist Dorgelesse and her family through the difficult moments of her detention. On 16 January,
• Court of Appeal reduced her sentence.

ICC warrants for Taliban Leaders, 2/n

In 2023, Amnesty International released a report on the Taliban's war on women.
Following its findings, the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor filed a request for arrest warrants against the Taliban's Supreme Leader and their Chief Justice, citing crimes against humanity.
The request charged the Taliban's Supreme Leader and their Chief Justice for gender persecution against women, girls, and LGBTI people since their return to power in August 2021. These are the first public arrest warrants sought by the ICC in Afghanistan since the country became a member of the court in 2003.

Key points…

The Code is guidance, not law. It does not create new legal duties. It sets out the EHRC's interpretation of how the law should be applied following the ruling. Once in force, courts and tribunals must take it into account, but it is not itself the law.
Organisations are not required to exclude you. The legal exceptions that may, in limited circumstances, permit exclusion are discretionary, not mandatory. The Code itself recognises that the use of exceptions is a matter of choice, not obligation. An inclusive approach is not, by that fact alone, unlawful.

Like a snowball: the growth and impact of the gender critical movement in the UK
Executive Summary
At a time when human rights protections are being weakened across the board, a movement against the rights of women and LGBTI people is growing in the UK. In recent years governments have passed laws that greatly limit the right to protest and introduced draconian immigration and asylum rules. Since 2010, cuts to social security and reduced funding for public services have worsened poverty and made living conditions harder. Amnesty International UK has spoken out against repeated attempts to scrap the Human Rights Act and against calls from some politicians to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights.
In July 2025, Amnesty International UK released a study of 65 anti-rights groups in the UK, 32 of which spent £106 million from 2019 to 2023, a rise of more than a third. The study showed that the biggest spenders are UK branches of US groups, like Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF UK), whose spending grew by 258% between 2019 and 20244. The ADF played a pivotal role in overturning Roe v Wade in the US

A growing threat:
the anti-rights movement in the UK
Executive Summary
To understand the rise of an anti-rights movement targeting the rights of women and LGBT+ people in the UK, it is important to situate it within the broader context of a general deterioration in human rights protections. Successive governments have introduced legislation that severely restricts the rights to protest and freedom of assembly and have passed increasingly restrictive immigration and asylum laws that raise concerns about the UK's compliance with its international legal obligations.
In addition, in the context of Brexit and the political and media narrative of taking back control', there have been repeated attempts to replace the Human Rights Act with a British Bill of Rights, alongside ongoing calls from some politicians for the UK to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights.
Since 2010, repeated cuts to social security and chronic underinvestment in public have undermined economic and social rights. Changes to tax and social security policies nave disproportionately affected women, particularly racialised women and single mothers?.

Dear Robert,
We have carefully considered your letter expressing concerns about the fringe meeting and display People change: Sexual Identity Transformation.
The General Synod Fringe Meetings and Display policy reserves to us, as Presidents of the General Synod, the right to refuse space for a fringe meeting or display in certain circumstances.
We have considered whether this particular fringe meeting and display
should be allowed to go ahead under the terms of the policy and against the background of the motion on conversion therapy passed by the General Synod in July 2017 and other relevant matters.
So far as the fringe meeting is concerned, we note that this is to take place in an allocated room and will be attended only by those who wish to do so. Nobody who would find the subject matter being discussed distressing need hear the discussion. We also note that the Government, in its draft bill, proposes to outlaw abusive conversion practices and may Icave the door open to non-abusive practices for those who, of their own free will, have asked for prayer or counselling. In that light - even if we might find the subject matter uncomfortable or consider the position of Christian Concern to be mistaken - we do not consider that a discussion among individuals who choose to participate in that discussion would be contrary to the ethos of the Church of England or, given that it is clearly an individual member's private initiative and not one being promoted by any Church body, that it would impact adversely on the reputation of the Church of England any more than prohibiting it would do.
We also note that, although some members have raised concerns with us about inconsistency with safeguarding policy, there is no current guidance or code of practice which provides that non-abusive prayer…

on which members of the General Synod and of the Church of England more widely have differing, strongly held views that others find distasteful or offensive. To prohibit what is essentially a meeting in a private room for the discussion of such an issue would create an unhappy precedent.
The University of York have made certain requests in relation to the meeting. If the meeting is to take place, the organiser will need to meet these requests which concern the name of the event, the display of signage and a disclaimer.
We consider that the position is different in relation to the display. This would be a publicly visible statement of a particular position (and one that would be seen as in conflict with what the General Synod has previously decided). Any individual walking past the display would see it whether they wanted to or not. This could be distressing for some individuals, in particular any who were vulnerable and who might have previously experienced trauma or distress in connection with the subject matter of the display. That does seem to us to be inconsistent with the ethos of the Church of England. It would also be inconsistent with the House of Bishops' Safer Environment and Activities guidance about creating an environment where all people, including those who are vulnerable, are encouraged to participate in and contribute to all aspects of church life.
Our decision was therefore as follows:
• the fringe meeting may proceed on condition that the requests made in respect of it by the University of York are met;
• permission for the display has been refused.
