Why are there so many rapists in politics? The answer is that political networking in the US—for future candidates, staffers, and donors—starts in frat houses. Here’s a recruitment slide from the University of Michigan about how many of our male political leaders chose to join literal boys’ clubs.

Why Go Greek?

- 71% of those listed in “Who’s Who in America” belong to a fraternity.

- Of the nation’s 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by fraternity men.

-85% of Fortune 500 execs belong to a fraternity.

- 40 of 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910 were fraternity men.

- 76% of all congressmen and senators belong to a fraternity.

- Every US president and Vice President, except two in each office, born since the first social fraternity was founded in 1825 have been members of a fraternity.

- A national conference report shows a majority of the 600 NIC fraternity chapters are above the all-men’s scholastic average.

- A US government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non-fraternity/sorority persons graduate.

- Less than 2% of an average college student’s expenses go toward fraternity dues.

- The best of all reasons to join a fraternity is to meet friends who will accompany you through life.

I dare folks to Google “Utah student murder.” Charlie Kirk is far from the first person to die in a state that allows guns on campus. Calling Utah “one of the safest places on the planet” is straightforwardly pro-violence propaganda.

An excerpt from an AP News story reads:

Former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Republican who was at the event, said in an interview on the e Fox News Channel that he heard one shot and saw Kirk go back.

“It seemed like it was a close shot,” Chaffetz said, who seemed shaken as he spoke.

He said there was a light police presence at the event and Kirk had some security but not enough.

“Utah is one of the safest places on the planet,” he said. “And so we just don’t have these types of things.”

Today’s joyful hour was spent baking beautiful cookies with a recipe recommended by @neophytecatomn.bsky.social. In the moments of downtime, I sipped tea from one friend and knit a blanket with a pattern from another. It was a quiet day at home, but I felt surrounded by good community.

Anyway, this is the finished product. I’m pretty pleased with how much I could fix after a day of learning. It’s a lesson that I’ll be taking with me to a lot of places.
