This past weekend, the Portuguese naval tall ship welcomed visitors aboard in Boston. On Thursday, the ship departed Boston and turned its sails towards New Bedford, where it will dock Sunday for four days of open ship tours before returning to Portugal.
Steel-hulled and just over 293 feet long, the NRP Sagres was built in 1937 in Hamburg, Germany, and was acquired in 1961 by Portugal to replace an older ship by the same name. It sailed for the first time under the Portuguese flag in April 1962.

ICE’s Boston office called out Bristol County Sheriff Paul Heroux in a post on X last week. This week, the sheriff is firing back. ICE Boston wrote that it arrested Jose R. Martinez-Alvarado, a man born in Honduras, in New Bedford.

Ana Dias was born in Sintra, Portugal, to Cabo Verdean parents. Yet it wasn’t until she moved to New Bedford as a child that she began to explore her own Cabo Verdean identity in earnest. "For the years that I was [in Portugal], there were only two Cabo Verdean families in my town," Dias said.
