#BOTD Montague Rhodes ‘M.R.’ James, the most influential of all ghost story writers. James was a member of the Cambridge Chit-Chat Club. Each Christmas he would perform a new story for them. These atmospheric, scholarly tales are oft cited as the finest ghost stories ever written

#newbook The Narrenturm, the ‘Fools Tower’, was built in 1787 in Vienna as a psychiatric hospital. Built like a circular fortress, it contained 139 patient cells but proved impractical & closed in 1869. It now houses the Federal Pathologic-anatomical Museum, the subject of this small book.
It’s a very sad thing, but do we need the live coverage? Is there an expectation she might come back?
The Lethieullier #Dolls House. Currently displayed at the Huguenot Museum in Rochester, the house is styled like Palladian mansion. It was given to 10-year-old Sarah Lethieullier by her merchant father, but as a teaching aid rather than a toy. She was expected to learn how to run a household.

Scenes from Trentham #Gardens. They were designed by Capability Brown although the formal gardens laid out by Charles Barry in the 1840s are its most distinct feature. Trentham Hall once overlooked them but it was demolished as estates became increasingly unaffordable for owners in the early 1900s

Notably, it was taken from King John who kept it under siege for 7 wks, but lost it the following year to French Prince Louis. The walls still stand but the floors & roof are long gone
BOTD Amelia Edwards, novelist, journalist and author of the much anthologised The Phantom Carriage. A renowned Egyptologist, she travelled extensively and set many of her suspenseful tales in far flung locations. Other ghostly works include The Four-fifteen Express and Number Three. #books
