“This transfer of power that we’re seeing now is something that’s never happened before in Brooklyn,” Tony Melone, president of New Kings Democrats, told The City Reporter. This new crop of district leaders “don’t have to take orders from Frank Seddio or Frank Carone or any of the other shadowy figures that have run the party for so long,” he said, referring to past, controversial stalwarts of Brooklyn Democratic Party leadership.

In recent years, the political club has made some significant headway: 15 current district leaders were endorsed by the New Kings Democrats, said Melone. This year, the group is hoping to finally elect enough district leaders to make up a majority of the county party’s executive committee and overthrow the old guard, including current party boss Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn. “That’s when things could really start to change, because a majority of district leaders can elect a new party chair,” he said.

Carmella and Omar are exercising their democratic right to run for office. When Brooklyn Democratic Party leaders challenge every one of a candidates’ 1,300 signatures on file, they aren’t acting in good faith. They should withdraw these objections or they shouldn’t be leading our party.

This level of signature matching is an impossible requirement to meet, because there is no actual standard of comparison and because variation in personal signatures over years is common. For example, a 79-year-old voter’s petition signature was ruled invalid because it wasn’t as neat as the signature on her voter registration from 1980. If the county party and its cronies at the Board of Elections can leverage this capricious authority against anyone who challenges them, we simply do not have fair ballot access in New York City.

Today, as those challenges were reviewed at the Board of Elections, we witnessed an arbitrary and capricious process that threatens the entire process of ballot access in New York City. Candidates who had done the hard work of collecting the signatures of hundreds of their neighbors saw their petitions tossed out based on wholly unscientific judgments with no consistent or legal standard whatsoever. Board of Elections referees compared a signature on a petition and a photocopy of a signature on file at the BOE, typically many years old, and they tossed out valid signatures gathered legally and in good faith, based on nothing more than a vague sense they weren't identical. The Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair herself was present and intervened in the process on behalf of the objectors.

Carmella and Omar, in collaboration with allies like State Assembly candidate Eon Huntley and State Senator Jabari Brisport, collected and filed well above the required number of signatures to qualify for the ballot. Yet party-backed incumbents challenged those signatures in an attempt to remove them from the ballot and to prevent Bed-Stuy Democrats from having a choice at the polls in June.

Bed-Stuy residents and Stop Deed Theft advocates Carmella Charrington and Omar Hardy are running for Democratic District Leader in Assembly District 56 in order to reform the corrupt, opaque judicial selection process in Brooklyn. That process is one of many ways the leaders of the Brooklyn Democratic Party machine prioritize their own power over serving the people of Brooklyn, which is why we’re supporting the Brooklyn Can’t Wait slate of candidates to set a new direction for our Party.
