Spotted this crane fly "standing" on her tail in a flower pot. Turns out she was drilling into the soil to lay eggs! 🥚🌱 Zooming in with the #macro lens reveals incredible details, like her massive eye and flight-stabilizing halteres. 🛸 #gardenSky #MacroPhotography #BackyardWidlife #Nature

I spotted this crane fly "standing" on her tail in the dirt and had to get the macro lens out.

Turns out she was busy laying eggs deep into the soil. Zooming in on these often-overlooked creatures reveals some incredible details

At the second macro detail, you can also see her halter - that tiny, club-like knob behind her front leg. It's an evolutionary masterpiece; an old wing transformed into a biological gyroscope that helps her balance while flying.

Absolutely harmless, completely fascinating.
