Moms in "photo edit request" groups are just the worst since AI. What kind of psycho uploads a photo of their teenage daughter, who for whatever reason isn't looking happy, to a public group and asks for help to make her smile? This type is not uncommon, and I write "moms" because it usually is.

This may be the worst Facebook page I've ever seen. Almost all the content is "heart-warming" AI videos of toddlers, alone, going up to big dogs in cages to stare them in the eyes and hug them. And all the comments are about how sweet it is. This shit will get some gullible idiot's child killed.

When an elephant kills a farmer in rural communities, the State's position is clear: wildlife is res nullius it belongs to no one, and the State bears no liability. When that same farmer raises a rifle to defend his family, the legal frame inverts instantly and wildlife becomes State property, and the farmer faces a Schedule offence under the respective national laws.

Same animal. Same statute. Two opposite ownership claims depending entirely on who is bleeding.

This is not a drafting accident. It is the structural asymmetry at the heart of wildlife governance: political-administrative rights centralised in the State, economic-proprietary rights denied to the communities that bear the costs.

Most programs did not resolve this. They devolved user rights and the right to benefit from quota hunting without ever transferring proprietorship.

Communities became revenue beneficiaries, not owners.

The fiscal consequences are stark. Subsistence farmers absorb the full private cost of human-wildlife conflict i.e. crop loss, livestock predation, injury, death, foregone investment. The States and the private sector retains the full upside trophy fees, tourism revenue, quota rents, and donor finance. This is a textbook negative externality, borne by the poorest stakeholder in the value chain, with no functioning compensation mechanism.

Three reform pathways merit serious evaluation: full devolution of proprietorship to community entities; a statutory compensation fund financed from wildlife revenues; or a hybrid State-community trust with rights, liability, and revenue allocated by formula rather than ministerial discretion.

Until one of these is pursued, the elephant in the room will remain a Schrödinger's elephant i.e. owned by the State when profitable, owned by no one when dangerous, and never owned by the people who live alongside it.

That is not conservation. It is a slow-burning legitimacy …

I don't think Americans can fully grasp how absolutely insane every part of this story is to non-Americans. Even anti-gun liberal Americans... If you grew up in the US, I just don't think you'll ever fully appreciate the level of dumbfoundedly staring-blankly-ahead that goes on when we read this.

I don't know if there's a more harmful online meme than this. It is really only used whenever someone injects factual information into an incredibly dumb discourse or corrects misinformation. Its message is that if you have actual knowledge and use it to correct something, then you're a gross nerd.
