I'm taking a break from my Kuiper Belt epistolary for a sprint to write a short story in parallel - returning to my aetherpunk setting to chase my version of a vampire with a small pride of cat kin for today's #WIPSnips

I glance between her and her hunting partner, a muscular and older Pallas’s kin. Then I lift my chin toward The Ring and watch them both bear their fangs in delight. Sharp teeth phase through spell-guise for just a moment. My heart skips a beat. If anyone notices, shouts for the Jackals, we could all be in the Emperor’s dungeons before lunch. Luckily the morning crowd is heads-down and eager to be about their own business.

Is there more value in mapping the changes, perhaps with each MegaCorp keeping the knowledge to themselves? Is this age-of-sail cartography espionage all over again? Does the company with the best and most accurate maps gets to make the most money and lose the fewest employees and indentured folk? I hate it so much when these assholes play with our fates over the tiniest margin in profit.

I’m pulled from suspension in a jolt. Fast boot is disorienting — doubly so while on a ship with only thrust gravity and no atmosphere.
