Researching memory like it's either haunted or embodied (sometimes both). Singing into the void waiting for it to sing back. Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy by Uni Köln, often seen in France (which is convenient because I live there) nathaliadeavila.com
Stuff = soccer players. Nonetheless I could stare at this for 1 year:
With Nolan's Odyssey out, I wrote about 2 subjects I love: Ancient Greece and memory. I talk about how memory forms the poem's nonlinear structure differently from the movie and about death, oblivion and nostalgia in the Calypso episode open.substack.com/pub/nathalia...
Every time I go to Paris I somehow come back with an alarming number of chair photos.
My new criterion for future friends: their balcony habits. The second one in particular.
Won't attend my PhD graduation in Germany (it happens when you studied in country A, living in country B w/ your family in country C and your friends all over the solar system), **but** I am visiting probably the cutest place in Paris with my bff that just arrived in country B from country C 🤣✨️
It's Proust's bday. In december I submitted my thesis on memory and got stuck in Paris for Xmas. I found a ridiculously pink hotel and there he was. In june I won the GEM award in Bochum and the morning I left there he was. Since then I am on my way to finish La recherche so he stops haunting ❤️
Really wanted to publicly congratulate my friend Emil Rosina, who defended his PhD today at Ruhr Universität Bochum. His work explores memory features through verbal reports (emiling.info). Besides doing great work, as a trans man and neurodivergent scholar, his presence in academia is very needed.
Ces temps - Phd Ceremony invitation (Won't attend, I'm too far :/) + double exposure + spring + long exposure
Sometimes I wonder whether the existential weight of being Latin American existed so that thousands upon thousands of different forms of pain could redeem themselves through the most wonderful literature ever written. In the photo: I am reading Grande Sertão: Veredas after 11 years abroad.
I am becoming more and more creeped out when my friends say "this reminded me of you" followed by an image. For instance:
I hated Switzerland the first time I went, but yesterday I went back for a stroll with @zecamillo.bsky.social and now I’m in love. Not with the prices though. Definitelyin love with Café Mimiche, Geneva 🇨🇭💸
Finishing a Phd = increasing my glasses correction oh so very much. Still deciding on the new one, hopefully tomorrow 🐈
I just made a section on my website full of pictures of my thesis years. Just go to nathaliadeavila.com/affective-time-travel or click on Affective Time Travel (term by Katja Crone) in the menu. Photo: My first conference in Milan, during the design week (what a privilege!), 2018.
I logged in my old twitter account and found this post from August 2024. Apparently all my AI wishes came true, can someone unwish this and see what happens
Life lately: Emil Eva Rosina in Lyon, giraffe, suspicious love considerations, me overspending on a coat because it's pink as my birthday is in about 2 weeks and my Phd defense in about 3 weeks. Actually because of this I got exmatrikulated from Uni Köln yesterday 🤯🤷🏽♀️🩷🌸
Among us baby scholars in phenomenology/4E (distinction pending), a mood has emerged and it is called “intellectual anticipatory grief” in light of Thomas Fuchs’ retirement - the collective atmosphere giving vibes of "the end of an era". Anyone else feeling it?
The Institute Vienna Circle in Austria has a call for four fellowships right now. Not sure if many philosophers follow me beyond my personal friends, but I held this fellowship for a semester and it the work environment is great. wienerkreis.univie.ac.at
