Water supply estimates and forecasts have only grown more grim as basin states and Reclamation officials have searched for a long-term solution over the past nine months. Water storage in Lakes Powell and Mead has plummeted to its lowest level since 1957, when Glen Canyon Dam, which impounds Lake Powell, was still under construction, according to an analysis published this month.

By March, Lake Powell is forecast to reach a critical low. Its surface is expected to fall too low to generate hydropower at Glen Canyon Dam, according to a federal analysis released this month.

I can’t abide by this dismissal, 4 graphs in. Yes, individual prompts don’t draw that much energy. But the overwhelming amount comes from model training, which he completely ignores. Then he dumps the responsibility onto the individual by comparing it to things we actually need/want in our lives.

Data centers should be held to the same environmental standards as any other project. However, according to the researcher Andy Masley, giving up a lifetime of interacting with large language models would make a negligible difference in emissions compared with avoiding one trans-Atlantic flight or switching to a hybrid car. By his estimates, sending a prompt to ChatGPT is about as carbon-intensive as running a clothes dryer for a single second.

Americans in a new survey said they will need to save $1.2 million, on average, to retire comfortably, according to global investment manager Schroders.

Yet just 30% of the 615 workplace retirement plan participants polled as part of Schroders' 2026 U.S. Retirement Surveysaid they think they'll reach a $1 million savings mark before retiring, the survey said.

More than half of the workplace retirement plan participants — 51% — said they expect to have less than $500,000 saved when they reach retirement, including 24% who expect to have less than $250,000 saved, according to the survey. The 615 plan participants were among the 1,500 investors ages 30-79 who were surveyed nationwide between March 20 and April 15.

Notably, 33% of the workplace retirement plan participants said they have more credit card debt than retirement savings, according to the survey. Meanwhile, 55% said they are unable to save 10% of their paycheck toward retirement due to competing expenses, and 69% said rising costs have put retirement out of reach for their generation.

At least that was the prevailing sentiment in the ‘70s, when daylight saving time was actually made permanent, and swiftly repealed. Richard Nixon implemented permanent DST in January 1974, as an energy saving measure during the oil crisis. At the time, 79% of the public supported this expansion of DST…until it actually was implemented. In the first week, eight Florida children were killed while going to school in the dark. It only took one winter of that for public support to drop to 42%, and the expansion was repealed in October of the same year.
