Militant abolitionist and anti-slavery freedom fighter Captain John Brown advocated violent opposition against pro-slavery brigands. Leading raids and liberating enslaved people during the guerilla war known as "Bleeding Kansas" John Brown's name would come to evoke fear and rage in the enemy. Slavery apologists in Kansas would justly suffer under the destruction and mayhem caused by the fighting and Kansas would eventually enter the union as a free state. John Brown continued his crusade, culminating in a raid on the armory at Harper's Ferry that if successful, enslaved people and their allies could be armed and perhaps made ready for full-scale revolt. Captured during the raid, John Brown would be the first to hang for treason in this nascent United States, but his martyrdom for the cause would prove a potent example that the depths of inhuman cruelty that was the structure of American chattel slavery could only be defeated by violent opposition against those who enabled it.
