I was at Brocolitia today, just look at all the stuff, on top of the replica altars. Someone had even left a cup of wine.
The large tank in the SE corner of Housesteads Fort was built to flush the latrines, it could hold over 23,000 litres of water. It blocked the SE angle tower so must have been needed. Here it is today next to Knowles' sketch of 1898. Knowles was an extremely good draughtsman.

The first pillar box in mainland Britain was erected in Botchergate , Carlisle in 1853. To commemorate this fact a replica Penfield box sits in front of the Tourist information centre.
The only good thing about this awful heat wave is occasionally wonderful parch marks appear. I just love this Historic England photo of Corbridge Roman Town with the intersection of Dere Street and the Stanegate clearly visible in the field immediately West of the museum.
The north granary at Housesteads. Essential for storing food for the troops. The floor of the granary was raised to keep it dry and vermin free.The building sits on the highest driest part of the fort.

RIB 943 - 'found at great depth' during an excavation by Haverfield on English street, Carlisle. To the god Cautes Julius Archietus gave this as a gift.

Apparently it's #World bear day . Here's an odd looking bear on the exquisite Colchester Vase. Found in 1848, dated late second century. Currently on display as part of the Gladiators of Britain tour in Tullie House, Carlisle.
The much anticipated Gladiators of Britain & Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibition finally opens today at Tullie House.
The phallus is on the first course of stones, on the east wall of the caldarium. Just above the ground level on your left as you walk into the hot room. It's not alone. There is a little figure on one side, and an 'egg' or oval on the other. Then the next stone has a bird. What does it all mean?
RIB 1065. The absolutely stunning tombstone for Regina, 2nd century. Found in 1878, in an area that is today Morrison's carpark, South Shields. On display in Arbeia Roman Fort. Unusual for the last line of the inscription which is in Palmyrene - Regina, the freedwoman of Barates, alas.
I gave the old tree a hug and I was surprised by how emotional I felt.
The Dinosaur rRevolution exhibition at Tullie House is fun if you are looking for something to do in Carlisle.
Apologies for the reflection. This tombstone of a lady with a child and fan has been described as the most elaborate tombstone ever found in Roman Carlisle. Found at Murrell Hill, SW of the city centre in 1878. Now in Tullie House.
Current excavations in the NE quadrant of Vindolanda. Can you see the plastic sheet in the soil,top left? That's to mark the old Paul Bidwell excavation from the 1980s. Amazing how well preserved it is.
Lovely to be back at Vindolanda today. One of my favourite items from the 5th century is this gorgeous copper alloy box lid with triskelion and blue glass inserts. Isn't it stunning!
Good turn out for the first open meeting of Hexham Community Archaeology Project. I've signed up, not sure what I can do. But it's going to be fun.
Hexham Book Festival 2025, thoroughly enjoyed Helen Gordon's presentation on Meteorites at the Queen's Hall. Plus a box full of goodies from Kielder Observatory afterwards in the foyer.
This is a photo of my last visit to Sycamore Gap. I parked at the carpark at Steel Rigg and walked to the tree and back , as I'd done numerous times before. I will never understand how anyone could destroy something so beautiful.
I volunteer in the Roman Gallery at Tulle House on Sundays. I get to sit next to this beautiful statue of Fortuna. She was found in the commanding officer's house at Birdoswald Roman Fort, #Hadrian'sWall.
Fascinating tour of Binchester Roman Fort with David Mason yesterday. Can't recommend it enough. I must go back and watch the old Time Team episode now :0)
