Ex BBC, occasional NBC hack. Kentish man in Northumberland, modernist, 45’s and 33’s, 144/282 munroist, cricket tragic.
Bob and Terry come out of the church at full time, unaware of the delayed kickoff for bad weather…
The incredible Mel Brooks is 100 today. Here he is at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle Upon Tyne at the UK premiere of “Young Frankenstein, the musical” in 2017. He sat in the row behind us. Starstruck? You bet…
The good book has arrived. I feel like the cricket season can start now.
Samson beats Palmer (not named) in the novels. Palmer beats Bond in the movies. His omelet skills are unsurpassable. Go well Len Deighton.
What a fabulous night it was too. Still confused by the bouncers acting like they were patrolling a UK Subs gig in 1979…
Disgraceful. I still have this. In other news, I can’t find my Tam Dalyell pamphlet about the sinking of the Belgrano which has become remarkably topical…
I look forward to seeing the footage…no mention in the 1971 Wisden Minor Counties roundup. I’m more concerned with the former Kent and England keeper’s presence. Having read his autobiography and several anecdotes I suspect his usual motivation of ‘have a good time all the time’ might explain it.
Week so far in records. Turntable + Aretha, The Who and Prince Buster
Our son Joe got married on New Year’s Eve. I took very few photos, there was a professional for that. It was so lovely to be at Hexham Abbey for the service and at the reception in Otterburn to share such a special day for all of us, but especially Joe and Hana
They might be late but they’re here…the Joan Morris knitivity is back with 2025 disco lighting!
Sunset over the North Pennines at the end of the first Sunday of Advent. Heed Ian’s wise words…
This bears repeated watching; what in the name of the good Lord Colin Cowdrey has been going on today?
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. A lovely 7 mile circuit in The Cheviots with @wendypilmer.bsky.social We didn’t see another soul with just birdsong and occasional artillery fire from the neighbouring Otterburn Ranges for company. What might two old BBC hands have chatted about on this autumnal day?
Fun fact: Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart had his obituary in the cricketers almanac, Wisden. He wasn’t a Stewart at all #totp
I’ll bet Pat Nevin’s been to see @edwyncollins.bsky.social on his final tour. Newcastle last night was immense
It’s the cover for this! Official AED bootleg, I think it was with orders in 2013 or so. Edwyn complaining about the monitors as ever…
Orange Juice April ‘81/ Edwyn Collins on his farewell tour 9/10/25. More than 45 years and what a story, what songs, What Presence? @carolinebinnie.bsky.social @scotspostpunk.bsky.social @edwyncollins.bsky.social
That’s me at the BBC done. 38 years + 2 days. Local Radio reporter, producer, network correspondent, assistant editor, editor, project manager. Shipyard and pit closures, riots, 5live’s launch, 9/11, war..Orwell started it and will always be alongside me. The BBC isn’t perfect but you’d miss it.
A remarkable end to cricket’s County Championship season. At Southampton yesterday afternoon Hampshire looked doomed but Durham let them off the hook. I’ve been to see colleagues at Lord’s, Hove & Canterbury lately too. A top bunch. Winter well all. #bbccricket
Is it #totp here? I’ve just been to see loads of Ready Steady Go at the BFI which beats it all hands down; and I sat a few rows away from an RSG dancer who was on with Otis Redding…
Leaving Brighton on a train; while it was a work trip (saw some of the best people in cricket at one of the loveliest grounds), my mind kept going back to the LP and the film…
28 years since the pager message ‘morning Doug, Di dead, need you doorstep Blair. Regards, Curran J’. Pic credit Raoul Dixon who cropped me out of r/h side of frame, leaving the legendary Richard Wells in. Strange days indeed
Fantastic find at Sister Ray on a flying visit to Soho this week. The evolution of George Clinton’s music is a 20th century wonder to behold.
R.I.P. Terence Stamp. His flatmate might have got more famous but he had way more style. His autobiography contains great detail about the importance of a shirt’s collar roll. And his brother managed The Who. I mean…Sha la la…
My dad was a writer (admin clerk I guess) in the navy. Somewhere in the Pacific 80 years ago today. No diary, which is a great shame. Eventually discharged spring ‘46
