"Math identity" = how I see myself in relation to math. If a kid doesn't have a positive one, they're won't thrive — not for lack of knowledge...because of how they see themselves. We expect every child to read & write, why let them opt out of math? New post: novakatz.substack.com/p/math-ident...
🔥🔥🔥 @joboaler.bsky.social with the truth bombs over here!! 🔥🔥🔥 "I want you to struggle, it's really good for your brain. It's when you're making these amazing connections and growing parts of your brain." ― Jo Boaler on reframing struggle as beneficial for learning share.snipd.com/episode/d385...
"Joy is evidence of belonging." As a coach, it can be hard to find belonging. Coaches live in an in-between space. Between teams, between blurred lines, between schedules. The coaches I know who feel joy all work on teams. This, then, validates this quote. share.snipd.com/episode/b14b...
I'm reviving my Facebook Group directed towards families. I started MathieMomma in 2018 because so many families were coming to me for math help. It's a community of teachers & families looking to understand math more deeply. 💖 www.facebook.com/groups/Mathi...
Check out this task designed from the world's largest guacamole! Thanks Jeffrey Ringer ! lnkd.in/gaS7QYtH
Düsseldorf, you were beautiful!! Thanks for the great time! Can't wait to come back!
Check out these incredible thinkers!! 22 people in the room and they had no idea we were taking an "usie" together! Usie = selfie + us 🤣 THIS is what engagement looks like. THIS is what we want students to experience! THIS is what creates conditions for learning!
This is what a BTC Workshop sounds like! The beautiful buzz of Thinking: curiosity awakened, conversations started. Thanks Düsseldorf for your energy! 🐝⠄⠂⠠⠂݆
This makes me think that when we have fixed mindset students, such as my fourth grader, instead of asking them to explain their thinking or do a glass assessment, we could ask them to groupitize. share.snipd.com/snip/3010151...
Chase & Vanessa host the BEST podcast episode of all time (ok, in the realm of education). They unpack 2 types Of teachers: Chaos Driven Versus Highly Structured. You have GOT to listen!! Which kind are you!?? share.snipd.com/snip/31b0526...
"I just want to say thank you so much for your amazing workshop.... we tried BTC as soon as we were back in classroom. It is truly amazing & impactful. Your workshop inspired us so much. The students are way more engaged and love to participate. (I even used [it] for my advisory... So much fun!!)"

So true—math begins with play. I came across a study claiming 44% of young children’s play is mathematical, and Judith’s take on early years vs society’s view of “math” is eye-opening. Definitely worth a read: blog.innovamat.com/en/interview... #PlayBasedLearning
Big win — states are ditching "fluently" for clearer, more inclusive standards. Grateful to Christina for sharing this insight. Watch here: youtu.be/RyPHSFuXQyM
Triangles and Pentagons and Hexagons, oh my!! (Now we’re wondering if it’s possible to recreate this without any hexagons!) I’m with my daughter at The Natural History Museum in Shanghai and check out the shapes that make up the wall to this gorgeous garden!
"This is where the area model becomes so important. It is not just a strategy. It is a representation of the distributive property..." Thank you @gfletchy for this great writeup! --> It's so important to consider if students are ready for a more abstract model. mailchi.mp/3be9d1691aa4...
OMG This 1st grader's response to "Draw a picture of you doing math at school" is priceless! "Me writing about math. I stand up at my desk when I do math because it helps me concentrate." #buildingthinkingclassrooms

This would be an awesome task to thin slice for productive practice with perimeter with Grades 3 & 4 @GoodQuestionstoAskInMathClass Basic: Same size area, stacked evenly Intermediate: Same size area, stacked like bricks (as shown) Advanced: 2 sizes of area, stacked evenly or like bricks Thoughts?

Why Math Identity Matters w/ Liesl McConchie. Liesl says teachers try strategies that fail but keep iterating when they have hope that things can improve. Research shows hope fuels effort — without hope teachers and students merely "skate by." This is why Nav Tools for students are so important!
If you know anything about my why, you’ll know why this brought me to tears. This is evidence that my “Math & Me” workshop WORKS! Parents are healing their math trauma and rediscovering math! Want to learn more? Hit me up!
Say you BTC without saying you BTC… 😂🤣🤣 #thingsyoufindinyourpocket #buildingthinkingclassrooms
