The supposed crisis in young men in America appears to be mirrored in at least one segment of the adult population, namely the male electorate bemoaning the fall of Graham Platner. There seems to be a deep yearning to uphold rather than scrutinize toxic masculinity, a disturbing revelation.

"I'm right there with Emma [Vigeland, co-host of The Majority Report]. I had never seen that symbol of [Graham Platner's] tattoo, and still find a plausible that he didn't know what it was. I was okay with the initial unsettling allegations from that controversy a few weeks before the latest. And finally, I think that there is a rational case to be made that an [anti-Israel] rapist is better than Susan Colllins."

"This puts the lie to the idea that this is an election where democracy is at stake. This cannot be true. Biden wouldn’t be rolling the dice in a bid for re-election, where he can 'aw, shucks' a loss if one comes his way. He’d be pulling out all of the stops to rescue the country. There’s no way that, in such a state of emergency, that he would leave any votes on the table.

Interestingly, in the examples that Bouie listed, he did not mention the medical event in the White House where someone fainted and everyone rushed over to help the person — all except Trump, who literally stood by as though waiting for someone to move furniture or take out the trash.

I don’t remember Kulinski telling his audience not to vote for Harris. But, even if that were so, third-party votes did not provide the margin of loss. This is a strawman built to shame voters, rather than put the blame where it belongs — on the candidate for a poor strategy.

Win margins for swing states in the 2024 election. There is nearly a 600K vote shortfall n terms of third-party votes compared to Trump's results in those states.

I anticipated this argument coming from Chatterton Williams specifically. Something in me just knew.

"As a person of color (particularly as an African-American), in order to accept white supremacy in America, one must accept that capitalism is supreme. That is to say, slavery was all right in the end because now Black people have a higher standard of living than they would otherwise. The convert is convinced that he’s lucky (or even blessed!) to be here.

Several months ago, I touched on what constitutes narrative warfare.

"The tenets of narrative warfare, as well as psychology more generally, tell us that people latch onto information if it already aligns with other beliefs and data points they’re invested in.

Rather than comparing the Antebellum South to twentieth century racist regimes, this study compares Southern fascist thought to Germany’s nineteenth century _Völkisch_ movement. The author uses Roger Griffin’s Palingenetic Ultranationalism to explore how the Antebellum South promoted an illiberal vision of modernity. The author argues that proto-fascists rejected liberalism, had a profound sense of social decay, and advanced a vision of a new man, new political structure, and a new temporality. The striking similarities between nineteenth and twentieth century fascist movements mandates that the Antebellum American South should be included in comparative fascist studies. The results of this study contextualize the comparisons made between American racism and fascism along with deepening our understanding of fascism’s protean qualities."

Kristi Noem's labeling of Renee Good as a terrorist & Vance's praise of the murderer echo Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir's rhetoric w/r/t the IDF's actions against Palestinian civilians. These semantic twists have real effects on listeners.

"Far more concerning is Ben-Gvir’s praise of clearly murderous acts. His high station in the government and his elevation of these deeds mean that, in effect, he is blessing murder. When disguised IDF soldiers infiltrated a West Bank hospital in Jenin and assassinated a patient there in his hospital bed as he slept, Ben-Gvir exalted those assassins as heroes to be commended. And this week, when IDF soldiers guarding a high perimeter in Jerusalem shot and killed a 12- or 13-year-old Palestinian boy playing with a sparkler during the Ramadan holiday, Ben-Gvir labeled the boy a ‘terrorist’ and said the soldier was a ‘warrior.’ He said he would try to get the soldier an award. This would be for sniping a pre-teen in the head."

You're not going to like where this is going. I say this as someone who for the last decade has studied such subject matter as social psychology, extremism, cults, psychopathy, mass media, genocide, authoritarianism, US history, &c. I can scarcely express how much trouble we're in.

I know some say he went off the deep end later in his career, but if you have yet to read Wilhelm Reich's The Mass Psychology of Fascism, you owe it to yourself. He describes these psychosexual issues and their origins in detail.

"'*Man’s authoritarian structure* — this must be clearly established — *is basically produced by the embedding of sexual inhibitions and fear in the living substance of sexual impulses.*' (p. 30)

We don’t know all the details, but we can presume that in such dire straits Trump probably suffered from hypoxemia, or low oxygen in blood. This is a systemic reduction in oxygen levels, not just being acutely cut off from air supply but rather a state that would require concerted efforts to reverse.

As Xavier Márquez said in "The Mechanisms of Cult Production" (2017), these displays of loyalty get costlier and costlier:

$"In order to encourage distinctions between those genuinely committed and opportunists, leaders may thus encourage ever more elaborate displays of flattery—in essence increasing the 'cost' people must pay to signal their loyalty—while the very scarcity of rewards may in any case incentivize individuals to produce such displays.… Those wishing to present themselves as genuinely loyal must then spend more effort increasing the 'signaling value' of their cult artifacts, which often involves the production of ever more extravagant or unbelievable flattery…. "The early period of the Cultural Revolution in China is particularly abundant in examples of this inflationary dynamic. Highly committed Red Guards established an expectation that ordinary people needed to visibly show support for Mao (and recognize his extraordinary qualities) to avoid harassment or worse.
