iwtv/tvl thoughts and spoilers and stuff because the last episode fucked me up and i can’t stop thinking about it

Some thoughts on early IWTV/current TVL Lestat’s actions during my most recent watch.

Firstly, Nicky screaming, “I want you to love me enough to give it to me!” fueling his decision to change Louis so quickly, so that Louis would never feel the same kind of rejection and insecurity. Then, Nicky’s death being the reason he forced Claudia to watch Charlie’s face melt, so she would truly learn the lesson that Nicky’s death taught him. People are fragile. You lose them easily—by accident, by design, through the cruelty of others, as a vulnerability to yourself and your desire to keep them, or their own decisions.

I don’t always agree with his methods, obviously, but I can understand his motivations for both. He buried himself for the better part of a century to hide from the pain of loss and abandonment. He wanted his life to be over—not enough to throw himself on the fire as Magnus had because, I think, some part of him couldn’t bear to do the same thing to Gabriella that was done to him—the abandonment of the maker. The same reason Louis didn’t meet the sun the day Claudia boarded the train. He couldn’t stand the thought of the aftermath in his absence.

Gabriella wasn’t a great mother, they both admit that, but that didn’t stop him from loving her. It didn’t stop him from seeking her approval and chasing the love he wanted from her. Catching her in bed with someone else brought him to the place where he was willing to do anything for her to give him that kind of attention and affection. Even the phone call when he tells her to stay away for the next century is a grasp at approval. “They’re cheering for me. They love me. They want me. It’s been twelve whole minutes of screaming for me.” He wanted her jealousy because jealousy is so present for him and shapes so many of his actions. He wants to be loved as deeply as he loves and he has never felt that kind of love before. Not even from his own mother, who was supposed to love him unconditionally and teach him what love even looked like. Even after he saved her from the true death.

Because he still loves all of his failures that way, despite everything. Despite the abandonment and rejection, he still runs the moment Louis says come to me. He still begged Armand to tell Louis he loved him back in ‘73. He still aches over Claudia through her hate of him. “She looked at me in the end…” She follows him, still. He remembers the moments of playing the piano with her, even through the pain and the anger, he remembers his daughter. He refuses to entertain her doppelgänger because her heart doesn’t sound the same, because her eyes are wrong—not the lack of stained glass eyes, but the spark behind them that was her.

His jealousy, in the end, is of his own love. He covets that love to the point of the extreme.

Again, I don’t condone all of his methods but, god, my poor baby. I do understand.
