It’s been a spectacular few days in the Southern Great Barrier Reef on the RVInvestigator. Getting lots of great oceanography data and sea floor mapping, along with more sediment cores to understand the past, present and with improved models… the future. 🌊🪸🐋

Mid voyage transfer at Heron Island today with the sea country rangers swapping off for another cohort. Thanks to the UQ heron island boating crew for safely delivering the team.

Successful first week on the #RVInvestigator in the Sourhern Great Barrier Reef 🪸. Lots of samples and data - great team, and lots of great science. Everyone finally over their sea sickness. 🌊🐋
Excited to set sail on the big blue ship (#RVInvestigator) today after years of planning this voyage with the traditional owners Darumbal and neighbours Woppaburra to study the submerged landscapes and the oceanography of their sea country. Nice send off - a smoking ceremony by tribal experiences.
Exciting anniversary present from my husband - 2 days before heading out to sea for my next research voyage. Hope we don’t need it on the ship…
Very proud of my PhD student Molly Husdell who just handed in her thesis using diatoms to study past changes in sea ice and ice sheets in East Antarctica during the Pleistocene. Co-supervised by Vikki Lowe (stats guru), Amy Leventer (diatom guru) and Kevin Welsh. Handed in on time! 🌊

Cape York is about to be hit by a cat4 cyclone Narelle. It is very fast moving, but winds over 200 km are bound to cause extreme damage. Largest 🌀 in Aus for a long time. Hope everyone in the small communities up there stays safe.
Anyone else dress on theme when they are teaching? I regularly wear this pair of shorts for my marine classes in summer. Combined with my PS Sonne t-shirt @sgn.one. Nice to see I wasn’t the only one on theme today with Carissa Klein @uq-cbcs.bsky.social also dressed in a marine pattern dress.
I’m exhausted after my first 4 hours… but excited as I decided to give just a short intro and then get the students straight into the lab to cut and split deep marine sediment cores that I was recently donated by a retired colleague. Look at the beautiful carbonate ooze in the cores.

Challenging and important session on indigenous perspectives on polar climate #CLiC2026 @clicwcrp.bsky.social - from Māori to Arctic - expertly chaired by Billy Van Uitregt. Lots of historical/cultural knowledge that is missed when we focus on western science. Need to integrate both perspectives.
