Bridging Science and Policy for a Healthy Ocean 🌊
👋 Hello to new and consolidated followers! Let us introduce ourselves. The International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) brings together science, communications, policy, and legal disciplines to drive ocean solutions.
Happy #WorldKrillDay! 🦐 Antarctic krill act as a giant conveyor belt, constantly moving carbon down from the water’s surface by eating carbon-capturing algae, then dropping carbon-filled poop at the bottom of the ocean. Today we celebrate this tiny but mighty crustacean @antarcticasouth.bsky.social
Human activities are heavily reducing biodiversity and the benefits ecosystems provide to people. #MPAs help, but only slightly. Even strong protection offsets a small part of human impacts. #MPADay https://www.nature.com/articles/s41559-026-03008-2 @uflandrin.bsky.social
🌿#Mangrove ecosystems are one of the best defenses against the effects of the climate crisis. They store carbon, minimise #ClimateChange impacts and protect coastal communities from storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels and erosion. #WorldMangroveDay buff.ly/I63Dq3o @ipbes.net
For the first time, the Our Ocean Conference is taking place on African soil. #OOC11 in Kenya will put African ocean leadership, coastal communities, and the Western Indian Ocean at the centre of global action. https://ouroceankenya.com #OurOceanKenya #OurOceanConference
🌊 On #WorldOceanDay, we celebrate the incredible ocean processes that regulate our climate and make life on Earth possible. From circulating currents to microscopic plankton—and even 🐟 fish—our ocean plays a huge role in capturing and storing carbon. #BlueCarbon #OceanClimate
@unep.org and IOC UNESCO are conducting a global survey to better understand how ocean pollution is perceived and addressed across communities worldwide. Your answers will help shape actions you want to see. Submit your answers ➡️ https://bit.ly/3RhDKVS 📷 Naja Bertolt Jensen / Unsplash
#BiodiversityDay, #WorldFishMigrationDay, and #WorldTurtleDay, celebrated this weekend, are a powerful reminder of ecological connectivity. By moving across borders and biomes, migratory species maintain the balance of our marine world. #IDB2026
From seals and coral reefs to sea turtles and sharks, many marine species are facing potential extinction, threatened by #overfishing, pollution and #ClimateChange. On #EndangeredSpeciesDay, here are some of the ocean creatures most in peril: https://coralvita.co/coral-cafe/endangered-sea-animals/
Protecting space for #mangroves expansion can safeguard carbon storage, coastal protection and tourism under future sea level rise. Conservation measures deliver benefits across all sectors, especially for the climate and the economy. https://www.nature.com/articles/s44183-025-00170-1
Follow us for marine science and communications increasing our collective understanding of the role of the ocean to life on Earth. #OceanScience #OceanAction
Fishing vessels can lure seabirds with easy food but expose them to deadly bycatch, creating ecological traps. Slow-breeding species such as albatrosses are most at risk. #WorldMigratoryBirdDay https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320725007116
The deep sea makes up 90% of the ocean's living space. It’s home to ancient corals, bioluminescent wonders, and systems that help make life on Earth possible. A healthy deep sea is essential for climate balance and biodiversity. #DeepDay @deepseaconserve.bsky.social
Genomic comparisons show that commercial whaling caused lasting genetic damage to humpback whales. Even as populations recover, reduced genetic diversity may limit their ability to adapt to future environmental change. @gelifes.bsky.social https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.ady7091
This #EarthDay calls on the global community to unite in accelerating the transition to renewable energy. 🌊 The ocean holds vast, untapped potential. From waves to tides to currents, ocean renewable energy could play a powerful role in addressing #ClimateChange and building a sustainable future.
The High Seas is under growing pressure: warming, acidification, overexploitation. #BBNJPrepCom 3 must lay the groundwork for #BBNJCOP 1 to move quickly toward High Seas #MPAs and sustainable management of our ocean. @highseasalliance.bsky.social
As large herbivorous marine mammals, manatees play a critical role in maintaining seagrass bed health, supporting the broader coastal ecosystem that fish, invertebrates, and other species depend on. 🦭 #ManateeAppreciationDay #MarineScience
Scientists have discovered a new #DeepSea species of a filter-feeding worm, 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘱. 𝘯𝘰𝘷., in the Sea of Okhotsk at depths down to 1,551 m. A broader ecological change, possibly linked to pollution-driven habitat shifts, is overturning the taxonomy of these animals.
Satellite data from 1992-2025 show that most Antarctic glacier grounding lines remain stable, but major retreat is occurring in vulnerable regions. Warm ocean water reaching glaciers is driving ice loss, highlighting areas that could accelerate future #SeaLevelRise. #WorldMetereologicalDay
Decades of progress in protecting marine mammals are at risk as US lawmakers move to weaken the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aec4817 #WorldWaterDay #InternationalDayOfTheSeal
🌿 #StPatricksDay ocean edition When you look under the ocean surface and see green, you are usually seeing the "machinery" of life: phytoplankton (The "Grass" of the Sea), marine macrophytes and dissolved organic matter. "Green" water is "productive" and nutrient-rich, supporting the food web.
🌿 Seagrasses are unsung heroes in ocean carbon storage, storing vast amounts of #BlueCarbon and providing a crucial habitat for marine life. Protecting these vital ecosystems is essential for both climate action and biodiversity. #WorldSeagrassDay
🐬 In Italy 🇮🇹, 1 in 8 dolphins are harmed by fishing gear. Gillnets dominate confirmed deaths, with cases of larynx entanglement and gear ingestion, while trawl bycatch was less frequent. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1097819
🐋 Humans & whales are more similar than we think! 🎶 Humpback whale songs share statistical patterns with human language 🗨️ Whale vocal sequences follow key efficiency principles found in human language. 👥 Whales exhibit complex social behaviours, group identities & cultural learning. #WorldWhaleDay
⏳ Years of negotiation, advocacy & collaboration have led to this historic moment! The #HighSeasTreaty is now in force, a testament to the leadership of governments, civil society, Indigenous leaders, scientists & many more ocean champions everywhere. #60toGlobal @highseasalliance.bsky.social
Season's Greetings from the ocean! 🌊🎄 Many marine species display colours, patterns and forms that echo the winter season: https://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life/fish/happy-holidays-ocean @smithsonianmag.bsky.social 📷 Christmas Tree Worms photographed by Nick Hobgood @amphibiologist.bsky.social
#WorldWildlifeConservationDay is a reminder that protecting ocean life is essential to planetary stability. 🦈 #Sharks are declining due to overfishing, illegal trade, and habitat loss. Many species now sit at the brink, despite their critical role in maintaining balanced, functioning food webs.
Antarctica remains one of Earth's last wilderness areas, but it is under increasing pressure from human activities. On #AntarcticaDay, a few scientific studies remind us of the importance of urgent protection for this fragile continent. 🧵 📷 Kimberley Collins
🌊 This #BlueFriday, we’re choosing to value what truly sustains us: the ocean. Today is a reminder that healthy seas regulate our climate, generate oxygen, and support life on Earth. Protecting the ocean is essential for a stable planet. #OceanConservation #BluePlanet
