7/4/26 National Anthem (2023, Luke Gilford, streaming) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Moving and poignant queer western drama gorgeously filmed with great performances all around. A heartfelt slice of life that never overplays its charms or heartache.
7/3/26 The Outlaws (2017, Kang Yoon-sung, blu ray) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The start of The Roundup franchise with the electric Don Lee, setting up so many of the action and humor elements that make the series so fun. Have to leave ACAB at the door but it’s all in the name of a good time.

6/28/26 Unmasked Part 25 aka Hands of Death (1988, Anders Palm, blu ray by VinSyn) ⭐⭐⭐1/2 The pathos of Shelley's Frankenstein in a meta satire of slashers with delightfully over the top practical gore effects works but sometimes drags, but what an ending!
6/26/26 Silent Movie (1976, Mel Brooks, DVD) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What an uncomplicated delight with several of the funniest sequences of Mel Brooks’ entire filmography and my nominee for best joke of all time (the Marcel Marceau sequence)
All they had to do was something as basic as this but no, it's all cheap shit, all that wealth and they’re patriotismmogged by a 50 year old quarter

From Beyond (1986, Stuart Gordon, fantastic 4k package from @vinsyn.bsky.social) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Incredible (and incredibly gooey) practical effects abound in maybe the perfect 80s cosmic horror midnight movie
Reviver 2 (two 1960s features involving Michael DuPont, from @reviverarchival.bsky.social and @vinsyn.bsky.social) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not just reviving fully lost films from the ether but shining up a couple worthy gems from the fringes of the Twilight Zone/Outer Limits era. Really cool, important work.

Look Out, Officer! (1990, Lau Sez-yue, part of a Shout! Factory set) ⭐⭐⭐1/2 A magical 80s buddy cop romp written by a horny teenager kicked up a notch by Stephen Chow’s brilliant absurdism and live action cartoon hijinks.
7/5/26 Welcome To Hell (2021, Jimena Monteoliva, blu ray from @terrorvisionvids.bsky.social) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A well crafted slow burn that leads to a fantastic inferno of an ending, don’t sleep on Argentinian horror

5/31/26 Ronin (1998, John Frankenheimer, Arrow blu ray) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It’s not that no one can make a movie like this now it’s just that no one does, what a treat
5/30/26 The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001, Coens, 4k Criterion disc) ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Incredible use of noir tributes paired with post war suburban ennui and listless conspiracies, farcical tragedy of minuscule stakes, modern man as a ghost haunting his own life

Speed Racer (2008, Wachowskis, beautiful new 4k disc) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Way ahead of its time in using effects and color and design to evoke both anime and manga in live action, a brilliant cast obviously having fun, and slick, engaging action.
A Blade In The Dark (1983, Lamberto Bava, 4k disc by VinSyn) ⭐⭐1/2 So full of borrowed giallo and slasher tropes it’s almost a parody of itself. Some mean and nasty kills around not much else that hasn’t been done better elsewhere. Watch Pieces instead.
Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026, Olivia Newman, Netflix) ⭐⭐⭐ Modern comfort viewing with a classically great performance by Sally Field and wonderful aquarium photography. Lewis is clearly his dad's son in that he always looks 50 years old. Joan Chen cameo!
