Reused Sonic 2 sprites found in Sonic 3. What were originally used for the corkscrew runs, now used in areas like MGZ, CNZ, and DEZ, where Sonic is running up vertical cylindrical structures. Strangely, new sprites for horizontal cylinders were made, yet the Sonic 2 sprites still show up when he moves vertically. This is extra bad in Death Egg's anti-gravity chambers where it alternates between the old and new sprites

Granted, you can't exactly lean too close to 1998, cuz then you end up with what is essentially early Sonic Adventure artwork, but there's still a lot to pull from regarding some amazing ass 90s Sonic art

Sonic artwork by (I believe) Satoshi Okano, done for Sonic 3D Blast. It depicts Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, and 4 distinct flickies, drawn in a style leaning more towards what Yuji Uekawa would eventually draw up for Sonic Adventure. This Sonic also gets used on the Saturn box art for Sonic 3D Blast

A good chunk of art from that era was already pretty unified too. The American art shifted to look more like Sonic's original design, and the Japanese art took the SegaSonic aesthetic and cranked it up to an 11. Sonic also feels a lot more dynamic in this art, ESPECIALLY in the screensaver art

Cover art for Sonic Jam, featuring depictions of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in a style not dissimilar from the later end of the Genesis era artwork. The background also resembles the various Megadrive box arts for previous Sonic games using into bright geometric shapes and various dotted patterns, leaning into a sort of pop-art style

Sonic 3 and Sonic CD artwork made for their PC ports in the mid-late 90s. Mostly just renders on a plain white background, but the characters are still clearly designed with more of a focus on pushing their visual style from the older Japanese covers further, and feel closer to renders of models than 2D art

3 distinct later-90s drawings of Sonic by Greg Martin. The first one features Sonic and Eggman in space, Sonic sporting a jetpack and helmet close to the camera. The second image is Sonic from a LifeSavers ad, holding up a model 2 Genesis and a copy of Sonic 3. The third image features Sonic on a snowboard, as seen on the Triple Trouble cover art. These three are just a few examples of how later American Sonic artwork started to resemble the original intended design for Sonic, rounding out his belly more to be spherical and ditching the mowhawk for a denser looking head of quills. The expression's also less over the top than previous American Sonic depictions, though it's not exactly very expressive here either, still being a stock smirk at the camera

4 games that defined my 2025 ("Reviews" in alt text)

Deltarune: I don't think I've stopped talking about Tenna since before chapter 3 was even out lmao. This game has some really good characters, a lot of heart, and some pretty fun gameplay mechanics, especially towards the end of what's currently available. Really hyped for chapter 5 next year

Sonic Racing Crossworlds: This game is so fuckin' hectic. I like how arcade-y it feels with it's design while also feeling like a much better spiritual successor to All-Stars Racing Transformed than TSR did. Very much a blast with friends, and it's got a really solid roster and lots of kart customization options

Super Mario 64 Coop DX: I have to be cheating with this one tbh. The amount of rom hacks, mods, unique game modes, etc that are actually supported here can make every session unique and fresh in some way. And the actual act of playing with people online is seamless most of the time. Like it's actually a really good project to look into if you have a group of friends that like Mario 64

Also FINE, YES, I'm biased after contributing to Character Select and working on the damn b3313 ports. Coop's still really good anyway though

Smash Remix: This one actually ended up taking the place of Smash Infinite (the Brawl mod) for "what Smash mod are we playing" when I have people over. It's a fairly simple but really cool expansion to Smash 64 with some deep cuts, some shitposty characters, and over all a lot of attention to detail and balance. Game's great at parties/with friends. 2.0's release made me check back at it too and actually give it the time it deserves

I just noticed Why tf does he have a cape? Not only does he never have one in the main show (not with his normal outfit anyway), but this is the only footage from the pilot as well where he has one. Every other shot is your standard Robotnik look from the show So like, what gives?
