4/x Map work. Got better with time, but also I just much preferred structural geology over the previous exercises.

Week 3. Or 4. Forgetting time at this point. Old school cross section topographic line marking - making my way across the page of a line, making notes on a scale to convert to a non exaggerated cross section of the study area.

If humans had x-ray vision, we probably wouldn’t need to resort to guessing, but unless we exhumed the entire area (infeasible), you can infer what’s beneath the surface based on what the rock unit is, how it’s oriented, and how it might appear in other places. In this case, based on the orientation of rock units surrounding a nearby mountain, the local structure indicated an anticline, or upwards-arching structure, situated next to a syncline “bathtub” right next to us, likely separated by a fault.

Final map. I was particularly proud of this one.

Longshot view of the one of the sedimentary layers. To head to the left would to travel forward in time, and to the right would head further back in time.

Has to be mindful of the locals. Nobody got harmed or bitten while out and about, but I’ve had numerous close calls with snakes that I couldn’t identify.

Basically my morning view for four weeks straight. Several times my sleeping pad punctured, and I had some rough nights.

Week 2: Horse Shoe Camp, a half-graben sedimentary sink demonstrating dizzyingly beautiful stratigraphic layering. The whole area was effectively turned on its side, meaning as you traveled from one cardinal direction to the other, you would travel back in time. Stay moving, lest the gnats eat you alive, here.

Clasts, or pieces of preexisting rock, stuck in the sedimentary rock surrounding it. A lot of energy was likely involved in this. Yes, that’s my field book, and yes, I was given that sticker.

The geology posts on my timeline have me nostalgic for my field camp, so I thought I’d share a few shots from that summer of ‘23. 1/x

Week 3: Antelope Mountain, NV. We arrived in this area to test our structural geology knowledge, as the area was dominated by a large syncline and anticline system based on the local rock units. Friend caught a shot of me running up an incline covered in what I believe is sagebrush buttercups.

Week 1, Snake Range, NV. World renowned for being the site of the Snake Range Décollement: a metamorphic core complex where younger rock slid off of older metamorphic rock. Lots of incredible metamorphic geology around here.

Old school geologic mapping tools for the day’s work in a northern section of the Snake Range. I typically hid out in one of the student vans to get away from the noise of the camp to work on my inking.

End of week 1: our team had a local that knew the area, and snuck us off to some hot springs that were being monitored by UGSS - first time I ever experienced that sort of thing! It was as warm as a bathtub.

Same group as before, with Polaris describing a horst-graben system, aka a basin-range system, a geological formation that occurs when a tectonic plate extend, causing the crust to both raise up (horst) or to drop into valleys (graben).

After lecturing for 1.5 hours, the latex dragon is left with diagrams used to illustrate several subjects, including: moment tensors/focal mechanisms (beach ball diagrams that demonstrate the 3d movement of a fault during an earthquake), sampling and mapping of geological units, strike and dip compass readings, and other field mapping techniques.
