By 2026, everything has become an app, a code, a portal. Yet the very people who built this country with their own hands now find themselves illiterate in their own homes. If booking a medical appointment or paying a bill requires the help of a son or a granddaughter -- assuming there is one -- then the system has failed.

This is not innovation. It is exclusion.

Technology should serve people, not determine who is still entitled to dignity.

Marine Warns Major Veterans Bill 'Will Cause Significant Harm,' Reverse GI Efforts

The Take Care of America's Veterans Act has faced some pushback from Veterans on key provisions, like on trades careers from UNACCREDITED schools (think FAILED and CORRUPT Trump University) and housing allowance.

A Marine Corps veteran and other advocates are warning that sections contained within major proposed legislation "will cause significant harm" to veterans, students, survivors and families.

The criticism is tied to the comprehensive yet somewhat controversial Take Care of America's Veterans Act (TCAVA) being deliberated in Congress, which has faced pushback correlated with budgeting, benefits, and purported negative repercussions on military service members with conditions including tinnitus and sleep apnea. The TCAVA introduced last week includes more than 60 veterans' bills, such as the Major Richard Star Act, the Love Lives On Act, caregiver reforms, VA modernization initiatives and combat-injured veteran expansions.

"This is the wrong moment to weaken the GI Bill," Marine veteran William Hubbard said. "Veterans earned these benefits in uniform for themselves and their families. Congress should be strengthening quality safeguards and restoring benefits to veterans who were cheated—not opening new doors for predatory programs."

New concerns, as explained in a letter addressed to the chairs and ranking members of the U.S. House and Senate Committees on Veterans Affairs and shared with Military.com, urge caution based on proposals that supporters believe could weaken core protections for veterans while exposing billions of taxpayer dollars to greater risk.

“Vietnam Veterans of America strongly opposes the inclusion of the Honor and Remember Flag provision in the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act,” said VVA National President Tom Burke. “We urge Congress to defeat this provision which seeks to make the Honor and Remember flag a national symbol for all servicemembers who died in the line of duty.”

“This proposed amendment was not adequately evaluated or discussed,” Burke pointed out. “And like H.R. 1363, the unsuccessful stand-alone bill on which it is based, Amendment #43 is strongly opposed by many veterans and veterans services organizations alike.”
“VVA believes the American flag is, and should remain, the singular national symbol representing the sacrifices of every American who has served and every American who has fallen in defense of our nation,”
Burke said. “The existing symbols honoring our fallen—including the American flag, the POW/MIA flag,

Gold Star traditions, and military service flags—already provide enduring and widely recognized means of remembrance and have unified servicemembers and their families for 250 years.”

In addition, the Honor and Remember Flag’s red-dominant design and gold star imagery resembles the original Bolshevik Communist flag, some variation of which has been used by Communist countries ever
since. That resemblance, however unintended, cannot be overlooked and is unacceptable as a national symbol to many veterans and their families.

The Gold ‘N Silver Inn will host a Pancakes for Patriots 4th of July Fundraiser on parade day, July 4, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. This walk-in-only community breakfast is donation-based, allowing guests to contribute whatever they can, with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting Veterans Guest House.

This event is sponsored by the Gold ‘N Silver Inn, with volunteers from the Knights of Columbus Council 7322. The Gold ‘N Silver Inn will be closed for their regular business hours during the breakfast to host the fundraiser. Organizers hope this will become an annual tradition honoring veterans and supporting those who serve them.

Reno's July 4, 2026 American 250 Parade starts at 10am.

Parade Details:

An opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with the National Anthem performed by Camille Davis and saxophonist Eddie Duran Jr. The ceremony will take place at the start of the parade route near Gold Dust West on Fourth Street.

The parade will start following the opening ceremony. The parade route goes east on Fourth Street from Washington to West Streets. Spectators are encouraged to gather along the route to show their support.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes, wagons, scooters, strollers, and other wheeled rides to help add to the festive atmosphere for the morning’s celebration.

Families can receive complimentary decorations for their wheeled rides, courtesy of the National Automobile Museum. Decorations will be available for pick-up at the Gold Dust West parking lot on the corner of Fourth and Washington Streets on parade day. In addition, participating children will receive a free pass to the museum, inviting them to continue the celebration beyond the parade with an educational and fun experience for all ages.

In a June 16, 2026, story for Government Executive, Erich Wagner reports that Congressional Republicans last week introduced legislation they say will improve the care that veterans receive from the federal government, though Democrats and federal employee unions warn the measure will degrade veterans’ benefits and employees’ rights. The Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (H.R. 9237 and S. 4744) is a package of more than 60 bills relating to the VA. Included is the Major Richard Star Act (H.R. 2102), a bill that would grant full military retirement pay to veterans who were forced to retire early due to a combat injury, as well as a provision to increase benefits to severely disabled veterans and the families of servicemembers who died in the line of duty. But Democrats described the legislation’s introduction as an attempt to add partisan policies to a popular bipartisan bill—a discharge petition currently sits just five signatures short of the 218 needed to force the House to take up the Major Richard Star Act—and said the expanded benefits in the larger bill are offset by $60 billion in benefits cuts that would particularly impact veterans suffering from hearing loss and sleep apnea.

In our times, the jury trial has given way to a conveyor
belt of plea bargains. At least some responsibility for that
development lies with this Court. When confronted with
coercive prosecutorial tactics designed to induce defendants
to take plea deals, the Court has often condoned those practices or let them pass in silence.

Today, the Court begins to correct course. It rules that
prosecutors may not always leverage their plea-bargaining
power to induce a defendant to forego the right to contest
his sentence on appeal. I agree and write separately to out-
line how we got here and some of the work still ahead.
