ryosen has had a crush on thancred since arr. he has always been a sucker for a pretty midlander and, during lord of the inferno, thancred was the only man he'd ever known who actually showed up for him, albeit very late. even still, that endeared ryosen greatly. thancred has since showed up again and again, not always on time, but always willing to leap into the fray.

thancred has had feelings for ryo since hvw, but only realized at the end of stormblood. ryosen has always been a steady figure since his recruitment, and the biggest hurdle thancred had before acting on his feelings was that ryosen was much too gentle. thancred has had a life of failures and mistakes and ryosen was always steadfast and patient and kind, and it all both irked him and made him want to lean in. he did not feel he deserved ryosen's love, but he wanted it very badly, and so he endeavored to make it so that he felt he could deserve it, one day.

ryo and urianger have had a stupid miscommunication for almost the entire first journey: urianger thought ryosen didnt like him - not even hate, just doesnt like him - and felt a lot of guilt about that bc uri thought it said something terrible abt himself at his core, given his nature for secret plots. but ryosen actually never hated him, hes just always had a brooding face around him bc that was his focusing face. he did not understand urianger for a long time bc he did not speak eorzean well, something he masked with the scions out of insecurity. when urianger was around, ryosen was spending extra energy into understanding him because he respected him quite a lot, and was afraid that with how academically inclined urianger was, he'd look down on him if he realized ryosen didn't actually get it.

both their issues get cleared up in endwalker - ryo and thancred open their hearts and kiss and ryo and uri have an honest chat before they ark, where they then laugh at how silly they were. all is well!

ryo recovers in sharlayan for a very long time in post-enw, and in that period, all three of them are glued to each other. thancred and ryosen are of course a little clingy during this budding relationship, and urianger, also situated in sharlayan seeks to make up for lost time, helping where ryosen's struggles went largely unseen. this is all to the point that even when ryosen moved on from the annex, both thancred and urianger have spaces in his apartment. its all a lot.

the wrench comes in here: because of how close they all are and how much thancred realizes he loves spending time with both of them during post dt, he realizes he has feelings for urianger too. this was something beginning in shb, its just that thancred at the time was much too preoccupied to have parsed out any of this. but he spends a lot of time one-on-one with urianger, too, both in the time leading up to and during their stint with koana. so, in dt, he brings this up to ryosen and urianger, because he wants to be honest about how he loves both of them and wants both of them in his life, and wants to give all three of them a shot together.

urianger has had feelings for thancred too since shb, but he never wanted to overstep - he was one of the first to notice ryosen and thancred's unspoken feelings, after all, and he wanted their happiness very much. urianger had always admired ryosen, as it was hard not to but never gave rise to those feelings especially since he (incorrectly) thought ryosen disliked him. now, though, those feelings seemed much stronger than admiration. post enw was a dream for him to to have had even a little bit of happiness with both of them, and now with both that and thancred behind him - who has, as of post dt, now kissed him - it seemed like a dream that could become their future if they went about it right.

now, thancred is not a good communicator, but he does have a penchant for insight. he didn't go into this blindly. he knows that urianger looks at ryosen when ryosen isn't looking back, and he knows that ryosen gets flustered, like he does with thancred, when urianger so much as brushes a hand or leans in just slightly. he knows there something there, and post enw has given him a glimpse of what all three of them could be.

on ryosen's side, its all been... muddy. post enw, at first, was wonderful, and he had never been happier. but near dt, he noticed thancred was ... drifting, just a bit. answering his linkshell less. not mentioning where he'd been. barely showing up at the apartment. when thancred meant to pleasantly suprise him by meeting him in tuliyollal, it didnt land well due to the radio silence before it. mistake 1

and suddenly amidst dt, after the rite of succession, thancred's telling him he likes urianger too. except the conversation is stilted, a bit, thancred just being a bit awkward, and another miscommunication happens: ryosen doesn't think thancred's liked urianger since shb, he thinks thancred has been WITH urianger since shb. it makes sense to him - he knows they spent a lot of time together in the first during the whole time warp years. and ryosen knows urianger is gorgeous and attractive and smart, he's always noticed that and he's known that a while, too. he must've just somehow didnt notice they were already together. thancred at least makes it clear he still wants to do all the lovey dovey stuff he's been doing with ryosen, and ryosen is relieved, but he feels so unsure now. urianger seemed to really like him, and they got along wonderfully, so that must mean urianger was open to this because there was no way he didn't know thancred was kissing ryosen. but then had he known, all along, to be nice to him because thancred liked him? he supposed you didnt do everything the scions did without getting a little unconventional, so he's not totall…

AND, ryosen realized only amidst dt, that he and thancred never had the direct conversation that they were partners either. they had simply kissed and then were sweet on each other and glued at the hip for a couple months. under ryosen's assumption, a couple months was nothing compared to thancred and urianger's literal years. so ryosen realizes, oh... oh. this never was their romance. he's the side piece.

thancred thinks the talk went well and has had ryosen's blessing to go after urianger too, and now, as of post dt, is working on getting ryosen and urianger together. urianger is tentatively hoping and being very forward with ryosen, laying down hints and flirts in his own way. and ryosen is both confused and hopeful at these signals and feeling very, very guilty at now developing a crush on urianger too, because he's afraid now that he's been intruding on a relationship this whole time.

they'll probably get their shit together in evercold and be a healthy happy poly couple, but who's to say
