Once again, the cruelty is the point.

At our service, we are already seeing the consequences. We see exhausted parents and carers terrified about what will happen next.

We see people scared to ask for a review, because they don’t want to rock the boat and end up with no support at all.

The question is whether we have the institutional courage to change course before more harm is done. Because once systems become sufficiently complex, automated and opaque, they begin to serve themselves rather than the people they were created to support.

Banned AI applications in the EU include:

Cognitive behavioural manipulation of people or specific vulnerable groups: for example voice-activated toys that encourage dangerous behaviour in children
Social scoring AI: classifying people based on behaviour, socio-economic status or personal characteristics
Biometric identification and categorisation of people
Real-time and remote biometric identification systems, such as facial recognition in public spaces

Some exceptions may be allowed for law enforcement purposes. “Real-time” remote biometric identification systems will be allowed in a limited number of serious cases, while “post” remote biometric identification systems, where identification occurs after a significant delay, will be allowed to prosecute serious crimes and only after court approval.

In some cases, yappers may suffer from underlying mental health issues such as anxiety or ADHD, which can make it difficult for them to control their speech patterns. However, this does not excuse their behavior, and they should still be held accountable for their actions.

I have seen activists in progressive spaces justify or minimise the same behaviours when targeted towards the “wrong” kind of Jew – one whose identity is somehow defined by the actions of a foreign government.

The Australian people do not vote directly for the prime minister. Rather, the prime minister is a member of the House of Representatives who leads the parliamentary party or coalition of parties with the support of the majority of members in the House. Each political party has its own arrangements for choosing, as well as changing, its leader.

This way of choosing the prime minister is a convention – tradition – that comes from the British Parliament. Another convention in the Australian Parliament is that the prime minister is always a member of the House of Representatives, not a senator.

Hanson, as the party’s registered agent, would face criminal penalties if she submitted an “incomplete, false, or misleading claim” to a commonwealth entity, according to the declaration signed by the party leader that accompanied the claim.

One Nation has previously been found to have wrongly claimed public funding for electoral expenses and the party has twice been forced to pay back election funding – once after the 2019 election and again after the 2022 election.

Of defending your thoughts as your own thoughts and not the thoughts of bigots and cookers, repeated and reinforced by algorithmic feedback.

Uh-oh. I feel a _Manifesto_ coming on.

It has become a commonplace in many on-line spaces, that if a service or product is free, then you are the product. This is not actually a 21st century innovation; it was just as true in the 19th Century when newspaper journalism was heavily subsidised through advertising revenue. It continued to be true when broadcast radio adopted the business model of using advertising revenue to subsidise broadcasting of entertainment content, including popular music and soap opera. The emergence of broadcast television, with privately owned commercial television stations repeated a business model already developed by predecessors in the newsprint and broadcast radio industries. And so on, until we arrive at the present day when the “free” services that we use to access information on the internet come at the expense of submitting to a regimen of constant corporate surveillance and manipulation through “social media”.

Keir Starmer has not yet congratulated Andy Burnham on his byelection victory (to be fair – he may well be asleep), but Kirk Watson, the Democratic mayor of Austin in Texas, has posted a message.

Congratulations to my friend @AndyBurnhamGM. I’ve greatly enjoyed working with him over the past three years as we created the Austin/Greater Manchester Sister City. He’s a very good, fun person. I am excited for his election as MP.

It’s almost as though that single syllable, ‘If’, is not just cowardice; it’s an invitation to Hanson to come back with a more palatable formulation, to sweeten the poison so the Libs can nod along without being caught nodding along. Because Taylor has been trying to retail a weaker dose of the same poison himself for weeks now. And the Liberal Party, as an institution, has been doing it since John Howard returned from exile. “We will decide who comes to this country,” was the original brew. Hanson’s offering the pure shit, uncut, undiluted. If you like the taste of it, why settle for the weak tea?
