Yglesias fatal blindspots are the belief that only one side is doing it, and that the side he doesn't think is doing it has any intention of allowing (much less listening to) opposing viewpoints.

If I got to puppetmaster all of moderate politics (which sadly I do not) the two core principles would be:

Helping the poor

A big tent on culture

The former distinguishes moderate Democrats from Republicans, of course. But it also distinguishes moderate Democrats from degrowth eco-fanatics and the really toxic strands of socialism and neo-Brandeisianism that center hurting the rich over lifting up the poor.

The latter I mean in a much more robust way than most current moderate Democrats. I think that on questions of broad moral and cultural values, politicians should try to mirror their constituents, not aggressively lead them. I think someone like Scott Wiener who is very left-wing on culture but also represents San Francisco should be a welcome voice in moderate circles but that we should also be finding a cohort of politicians like John Bel Edwards to run in states like Louisiana. My personal views are between Wiener and Edwards, but their views reflect the places where they live. With location-appropriate cultural politics in place, you can then try to do good economic policy — whether that means housing abundance in San Francisco or Medicaid expansion in Louisiana — to make people’s lives better in a pragmatic and thoughtful way.

What I would ask of everyone at the table is simply that they respect the diversity of America and the wisdom of trying to compete effectively across this vast and varied land rather than trying to cancel each other. And I would urge people whose passion in life is shifting public opinion rather than responding to it to find a different line of work than electoral politics.

I do, several times. I publicly said I was glad they were dead, in one case posting on Lj about it. And they did a lot less harm than Graham did. It's not so much that I want condemnations, but a lack of praise would be nice. "My condolence to his family, at their loss". Let the silence speak.

My hot take is that Lindsey Graham did many contemptible things but if you’re furious that his Senate Democratic colleagues are posting nice things about him today you need to put down your phone, get some fresh air, and remember a time when a colleague you disliked departed this mortal coil.

Lindsay Graham is dead. I will always remember my first, and only, encounter with him, when he looked the grieving mother of a dead police officer in the the face and barked he wasn't going to listen to her blame Trump for January 6th. When I showed him my body-cam footage from that day he turned away and looked at his phone. Rest in Piss you fucking worthless scumbag. If there is a hell I hope you're in it.

What got me is I was using the Model Rocketry Launch Pads. They, however, had been built a long time ago, before Van Nuys Airport had radar. Any rockets which went more than 100 feet up gave ATC the fits.

Norway understood the brief.

For the first time in almost 30 years, the Men's Team made into the World Cup. For the first time ever we made it into the quarter finals!

But in the end, we are most prouf of their spirit. Every single member of the team represented Norway with distinction. We tried our best -- but never forgot to have fun.

The idea that in 2028 the world is on the cusp of an Artificial Super Intelligence is right up there with incestuous triplets deciding you are the only one they can imagine fucking.

The 2028 election cycle is heated, as usual. AI is the biggest topic. The datacenters now under construction cost twice as much as the entire US military budget.23

Most white-collar professions are seeing disruption like software engineering saw in 2026; such jobs now heavily involve managing AI agents. AI companies have industrialized the training process: Executives say “let’s move into [profession] this year” and then the company interviews professionals, buys data, creates training environments, etc. until their AIs get traction. Then the AIs rapidly improve as they are used more widely in the field and accumulate more real-world data.

Watching @tastinghistory.bsky.social on the D-Rat bar I saw this. I know exactly where it was taken. The rise in the background goes up to the back side of the post, where Foxtrot, and Echo Companies; as well as EE2, The "Russian Village" Mess Hall, were. The empty slope is now small graveyard.

They also have no idea how apples work. Setting aside the time lag (three to five years to start bearing), the inability to assert a property right to them... Apples don't breed true. 99 percent of apple trees are not "spitters" not "eaters".

Person saying they are saving apple seeds to give to homeless people, so they can have a food supply no one can tell them they can't eat.
