A rivals to lovers romance where the sparks between the campaign managers are hotter than the competition.

Calliope Simons is in over her head. After a career failure deposits her back into her childhood bedroom in Ragansville, GA, she eagerly takes on managing her former mentor's mayoral campaign. If she's going to achieve her lifelong dream of running a major political campaign, Calliope has to win—or face the collapse of her career before it ever really starts. Unfortunately, as passionate as she is about her candidate's progressive plan to transform the small town she loves, that might not be enough to match the sleek professionalism of the other campaign's manager, Emerson Palmer: the guy who rejected her for a different campaign months before due to her lack of experience. The same guy she kissed after a round of drinks and a surprising show of support.
Emerson Palmer has an impressive resume, but he's lacking inspiration after a rare loss has him rethinking his purpose. When he takes a meeting with a less than worthy candidate, he's only thinking about mending his bank account. But when he finds out that Calliope, the woman who turned his life upside down months before, is leading the opposition, he jumps at the chance to be closer to her.
Orbiting each other as they campaign for their respective candidates, Emerson offers Calliope a way to cool the tension that threatens to boil over at every exchange: one night together to finish what they started with that first kiss. But once isn't enough.
Soon, they're relying on each other for more than physical release, and eventually, Calliope has to decide if a career in the political trenches is right for her—and if her professional rivalry with Emerson could ever be exchanged for a romantic collaboration.

I grab a soda from the Frigidaire, positioning the lip by the edge of the workbench and popping off the lid with a slap of my hand. It comes off cleanly, the cold air from the bubbles leaving the top of the bottle in a thin wisp of mist.
"Sometimes I wonder if we're not only angry she left, but that she left us alone with each other."
He tosses the cleaning brush onto the box of tools, one of his hands tightening in a fist. "This isn't exactly helping my blood pressure right now, son."
I sigh, taking a heavy sip, the sweetness of the soda lost in how my nostrils flare from the burn of swallowing too much at once. "You haven't exactly done much to help mine either."
"Well, fair enough."

I pause, considering.
"Yes," I say, noting how the lines of
his face and the curve of his nose speaks to me. It roars in my ears how much I want to keep finding ways to touch him. "You're not fully, all-the-way jaded and terrible, if that helps. If you were, you would have stopped searching."
"Who says I haven't?"
"You did, whenever you try and dismiss that you were misled by Reed," I say. "You're still looking for something to believe in."

He takes my hand, and I suck in a breath, his relief at my understanding him for once passing from his hand to mine. He squeezes my fingers intently, different from his appreciation or his thanks for accompanying him home.
There's need in those fingers, the small callus on the side of his thumb roughly passing back and forth over my palm until the sensation spreads all the way down to my toes.
"I believe in you," he says.

Fallon presides over his rituals of play like a vampire, feeding not on blood but on enthusiasm.
He doesn't really converse with any of his guests; they all know what they are there for. Rather, he extracts. He demands "relatability" from them, draining the authenticity from the interaction until only the husk of a "viral moment" remains.
The horror lies in the repetition: the feigned shock, the hysterical laughter at unfunny mishaps, the relentless "Golden Retriever energy."
It is a performance of joy so excessive, so desperate, that it reveals the void it attempts to cover. It is the logic of the assembly line applied to human connection. What Fallon offers is a standardized production of "fun" that feels increasingly like a desperate plea to ignore the crumbling world outside the studio walls.

During his confirmation hearings last year, Mr. Kennedy claimed, without evidence, that S.S.R.I.s were partly responsible for the rise in school shootings, and that they could be harder to quit than heroin. At Monday’s event, Mr. Kennedy repeated that claim.

HarperCollins said the process will be “creator-led,” per the announcement, but declined to address how authors will be involved and whether they will receive royalties.

The announcement comes just a couple of days after Harlequin, a division of HarperCollins, inked a similar partnership with Dashverse, a tech firm that produces AI-generated shortform animated series. Shortly after that partnership was announced, some Harlequin authors whose titles were selected for adaptation said on the social platform Threads that they hadn’t been notified of the deal in advance, though Harlequin claimed they would receive royalties.

It's incredible that an author's debut novel would have such excellent writing.
A well developed story that's a fast burn but slow in the feelings department.

Guinn really has a way with building believable worlds. The characters they write are so flawlessly imperfect humans that you can't help but like them. Calliope is snarky and impulsive, and Emerson is effortlessly patient when it comes to what he wants.
They make such a solid, sweet team, that you can't help but root for them.

This debut novel has great banter, lots of sexiness, wonderful supporting characters, and a timely hopefulness about how politics CAN make a
difference in our day to day lives in a good way.
