On this day in 1862, Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck was born. Considered one of Finland’s finest artists, she was among the earliest foreign artists to visit St Ives. Inspired by the Cornish landscape, she wrote: “Cornwall is the most beautiful place I have ever seen.”

🌞 Sunday Openings Are Back! 🌞 Starting this Sunday (28 June), throughout the summer, Penlee House Gallery & Museum will be open on Sundays from 10.00 am–5.00 pm (last admission 4.30 pm).

On this day in 1887, the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria was celebrated 👑 The Jubilee Hat, 1887 by Frank Wright Bourdillon (1851-1924). This scene depicts preparations for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Newlyn.

On this day in 1926, Norman Garstin died. Settling in Penzance in 1889, he taught artists including Harold Harvey and his daughter Alethea. His best-known work, The Rain it Raineth Every Day (1889), captures a rainy Penzance promenade and reflects Japanese artistic influence.

Happy Father's Day 💙 Fisherman with little girl, St. Ives Harbour, 1899 James Valentine & Sons The fisherman is Edwin Couch with five-year-old Bessie Berriman on his shoulder. Bessie recalled the photograph being taken and said that she used to run down to the harbour to visit her father’s boats.

Throwback Thursday 📸 A summer's day on Hayle Towans, captured on 23 August 1950. Seventy-six years ago, visitors and locals enjoyed these sweeping Cornish sands much as they do today. While fashions, cars and cameras may have changed, the beauty of Hayle's coastline remains timeless.

Work of the Week: Museum Interior (c.1875) by Elizabeth Forbes. Oil on panel, donated in 2007 by the Artist’s Estate. The painting reflects the limits placed on women artists in the 19th century: barred from life drawing classes with nude models, many instead studied busts and statues.
