Activists disrupted a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) conference in Melbourne this morning where the Resources Minister, Madeleine King spoke. CCS is a nice idea, but it doesn't work and is now simply an excuse for fossil fuel companies to keep operating. It's a scam. Thanks @xrvic.bsky.social

How I feel listening to people explain their fossil fuel sponsorship deals

Last year I just wanted to be really scary so pretended to be a lump of coal out of the ground. BOO to all who celebrate.

In 2022 I was pretty cross about Victoria's native forests being chopped down to make supermarket palettes so I dressed up as one. It's true that you should always remove one item before you leave the house. The hat was a mistake.

In 2019 I dressed up as Greta Thunberg. Because everyone knows the whole point of Halloween costumes is for middle aged women to dress up as kids who didn't waste their youth ignoring climate change

I went as Coral bleaching for Halloween because it's pretty scary. There was originally no pun intended but I realised I couldn't make realistic coral (dead or alive) in the 90 minutes available. This isn't the first time I've used a half-arsed Halloween costume to make a point about climate change

Scitech (WA Science Museum) is sponsored by a few fossil fuel companies. Including Woodside who provide "free" access to STEM club for kids. Free = access to educational opportunities in exchange for promoting Woodside. The cost to students is the loss of a liveable planet. Good deal kids?

This @youth4climate.bsky.social action at Sarah Whitty's office was in response to Labor's weak targets & fossil fuel approvals. I know Whitty is well aware of the climate science and risks and that Melbourne wants real climate action from Labor. They can't press snooze on Melbourne constituents!

Change is happening. Recent good news includes: The Museum of Economic Botany in South Australia isn’t named after Santos anymore The Newcastle Writers Festival is no longer sponsored by Port Waratah Coal. We will thrive without them.

“They've been so nice to us!” People working for fossil fuel companies often genuinely want to help. But their companies' actions undermine the work and values of the organisations they give money to, because climate change does that to everything good.

“We use our relationship to push the company towards positive change.” Fossil fuel companies don’t make meaningful change after working with good organisations. They are providing funding to get away with polluting more, not less.

“We can't get the money without them.” Fossil fuel companies WILL go out of business. We need to figure out how to thrive without them. They want us to feel dependent on them but we can have nice things without them.

“We all still use fossil fuels.” Fossil fuel companies are deliberately delaying the urgent clean energy transition. And one way they maintain community support for this is by sponsoring beloved organisations.

“We do good things with the money.” I know. Funnily enough, fossil fuel companies don't sponsor evil activities because they’ve got that covered in-house.
