“We welcome Keir Starmer’s resignation as Prime Minister. His government has failed to deliver real change, attacked party democracy, failed to shift power in the economy to working people and refused to unequivocally condemn the genocide in Gaza.

The next stage of this process must be a frank and open discussion across the broad spectrum of the Labour Party on where we’ve gone wrong, and what needs be changed.

It’s time Labour returned to its roots as a transformative movement that empowers working-class communities. From public ownership to wealth taxes, Starmer’s successor must be unafraid to take on the far right by standing up for real Labour values and fighting for popular policies.”

“Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield shows how we can win when all corners of Labour come together to defeat the far right.

This could not have been achieved without thousands of activists coming out in Makerfield inspired by the promise of a more hopeful, imaginative and inclusive politics.

However, his win alone does not resolve the crises facing our Party. Voters are looking for more than just words — they are crying out for real, transformative change.

Reform UK is still a serious threat and can only be defeated if Labour offers a bold, redistributive programme that genuinely improves living standards. That means decent wages, more social housing, properly funded public services and an economy that works for ordinary people, not a select few.”

"These local election results are catastrophic for Labour. To lose traditional strongholds - in Wales and across England - shows that the die has been cast for this Leadership.

We’ve lost hard-working Labour representatives across the country as a result of working class voters looking elsewhere. From workers’ rights to renters reform, positive change Labour is delivering in government is being drowned out by terrible decisions at the top.
For a true post-mortem of these results to take place, Labour MPs, councillors, members and affiliated trade unions must demand a complete change at the top of the Party. It’s even more essential that socialists rally together to shape our Party’s direction in the coming months."
