I take a look at #WindowsInsider builds and older Windows betas, with some randomness and bad jokes here and there. Twitter: @phantomofearth
Windows 11's File Properties sheets are finally getting some WinUI + dark mode love! A modern version of the Properties UI is hidden in Experimental build 26300.8935, currently only for the deleted files dialog with more to come. So nice to see after all these years! 🥳
Build 26300.8935 updates the new (upcoming) L1 Privacy & Security Settings page yet again. MS has ditched the fancy hero control in favour of a "core privacy settings" section with the location/camera/mic options, and Windows Security is back to being listed under "Security".
The Shut Down/Restart actions in the improved Windows Search announced today open a modern version of the Shut Down Windows dialog box to choose a power option. The one opened on desktop by pressing Alt + F4 still looks old so it would be cool if it's modernised as well soon.
Here's an early look at the upcoming notification previews on hover for the Start menu's mobile devices companion! this Xwitter notification preview shows the exact tweet contents and sender + when it was sent. (as opposed to just "1 new notification from X")
For anyone wondering how that taskbar search box size change in build 26300.8772 looks, top: before and bottom: after
The focus rectangles around the reset password/sign-in options on the login screen are getting rounded corners, more UI inconsistency being fixed. Left: old, right: new
Screen Tint will be getting a toggle in the quick settings menu's accessibility page.
Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8758 updates the name of "Xbox mode" to "XBOX mode".
More screenshots! There's an updated Windows Search UI with a highlight-less recent/suggested page (also as seen at the meetup) and additional at a glance info in search results. And as you might have noticed, it's now possible to turn off Store results as well.
Hidden in build 26300.8697 is the long-awaited option to turn off web searches in Windows Search for good under a new "Show suggested search results" section, as seen at the SF Windows Insider meetup. A long time coming!
For comparison, here are the open/save as dialogs without this change enabled.
Build 26300.8553 also includes a (not yet rolling out) fix for white flashes in file open/save as dialogs when in dark mode! ID 61372722 (WhiteFlashOnFileOpenSaveDialog)
MS is making it simpler to uninstall AI components/models in Windows 11. The latest Experimental Ge build (26300.8553) has some hidden updates to AI components settings, with new subpages for models that include an uninstall button. (thanks @techosarusrex for the screenshot)
If you really, really want to try out the new Start menu customization in build 26300.8553 but don't have it in feature flags, you can use ol' reliable, requires a bunch of IDs. (vivetool /enable /id:61754985,61225604,61596616,61596617,61596618,61596619)
For anyone wondering how the Start menu looks when you turn everything off in 26300.8553:
ISOs for FP Experimental 29591, Ge Experimental 26300.8493 and Ge Beta 26220.8474 are now live. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso
I hope the rejuvenated "We'll repair components and system files" settings dialog for Fix problems using Windows Update/IPUs is next to make it into Insider builds, it's another one that's been sitting in internal builds for a few years.
Heads up: The new Windows Update pause controls are *NOT* present at all in Experimental FP build 29591, despite what the release notes claim.
Now listed in Feature Flags for me, here are the two flags to enable.
Build 26300.8493 finally brings movable and smaller taskbar options to Windows 11! Doesn't seem to be in Feature Flags yet, so vivetool to the rescue for the unlucky. New taskbar positions: vivetool /enable /id:59213768 Small taskbar: vivetool /enable /id:61090762
The print option is also coming to the modern context menu after previously only being accessible in "Show more options", an option to quickly create a shortcut in the current folder is also present in this build.
More quality of life improvements are coming to Windows 11! 🎉 The Refresh option is finally being added to all modern File Explorer context menus, previously it only appeared on the desktop one. Hidden in Experimental build 26300.8376.
Early bits for Windows 11's upcoming small taskbar are in build 26300.8346! Here's the widgets button tricked into using its new smaller appearance for the small taskbar (notice the smaller weather icon). It's not much, but it's progress.
The ISO list on the Windows Insider ISO download page has been updated, also very nice to see recent build ISOs again after many months of nada! 🎉 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso
Undocumented change to Storage Settings in Experimental build 26300.8289: the change volume size dialog now lets you switch between MB and GB units, previously it would only show sizes and let you enter sizes in MB.
The new "Available updates" section/experience can be enabled in build 26300.8289 with feature ID 60897831 (FoldedUpdateExperience), not available in the feature flags page just yet.
The (still not rolling out) modern Run dialog was updated in build 26300.8289 and now looks like this:
