Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda in its bright green can. It is proud to be "The Original" and since 1869. It is, truly, a celery soda. It contains celery seed. It is sitting on a piece of scrap marble, there are Independence Day lights in the window in the background. (Yeah, that's what we're calling them now.)

Speaking of bears, the female who usually hangs out next door just stopped by hoping for food. Both of these pictures are *close*, like she's about 5 feet from the house in the one with the bright plants and about 10 feet away in the other picture. Closer than the deer. 🐻

Medium-sized adult black bear is walking from the driveway towards the front door (it's fine, there's a path, this is normal.) You can see the smaller (for adult bears) legs, less chonky, narrow wedge-shaped head, ears seem large relative to skull. This is a female who frequents the neighbors.

It's SO easy. I mean, this was last week (you can just see the burn pile in the back right). See the unraked leaves? Unmowed "lawn" - you get rewarded for being lazy with deer, turkeys, lightning bugs, birds, and, of course, Kevin the Bear.

White tailed deer, a doe, stands amidst a yard of tall grasses, wild parsnip, wild strawberry, and maple saplings. She has her head up after snacking her way across the yard. Apparently it's good browse.

Thanks in part to @sarahmackattack.bsky.social and her campaign to Leave the Leaves, I now have so many fireflies around my house that relocating them back outside is a regular evening chore. This one is a Say's Firefly, Pyractomena angulata (I think).

A firefly is flashing green. We can see the color and bright spot very clearly because it's on a wall, indoors.

A rare photo of them together from Christmas. Aether is a svelte 17 (upper level). Scooter started at 16 pounds, got to over 20, is now down to a steady 18. (The ham on the lower level.)

I think the data shown includes Kavanaugh stops - that's the only explanation for having "United States" listed as a country of origin for a detainee and these charges. (No civil disorder or similar that could have been a protestor.)

I know shit sucks, but I just read the extended weather forecast and if it holds, I can safely plant *this weekend*! First up, wildflowers and pollinator-friendly annuals from the Vermont Wildflower Farm as we rewild a meadow that held dilapidated chicken sheds and trash on the bank of a creek.

Low-growing wildflowers as groundcover, annuals and native perennials, in clumps including daisies, Sweet Alyssum, Dwarf Evening Primrose, Purple Moss Verbena, and dwarf poppies.

Before and After! New approach has a safer approach for the carrier (driveway) and the box is hanging above standard plow height. On the back of the mailbox 2x4 will be a small planter. Also, the house marker is now in front of the house, which matters in an area where GPS is routinely wrong.

A mailbox is mounted on a 4x4 post in a white 5gal bucket on the side of the road in rural Northern New England. Two driveway markers are being used to hold the bucket in place. The mailbox is tilted forwards and looks sad. However, it is a beautiful day with blue skies, a few fluffy white clouds, the dandelions are blooming.

A new reflective house marker and mailbox are mounted to a weathered 4x4 post. The mailbox is white, hanging from a shiny silver chain (zinc coated steel). The 2x4 from which the mailbox is hanging also extends out the back for future flowerpot.

It's almost Mailbox Improvement Week! In true North Country style, my mom's mailbox is currently in a 5gal bucket of gravel. Tomorrow, we're adapting an existing signpost to also hang a mailbox. For height, Maine DOT illustrated it and the Postmaster says 24" from edge of pavement or fog line.

A black and white Siberian Husky has the rips and is running like a crazed maniac in a double-suspension gallop. He is going just past the camera to the left because no, you cannot quite catch him yet. He's not done. He is running on short green grass with fallen leaves, brown.

In a photo from roughly March 2023, Sam Neill was walking uphill when he stopped to scratch his pig, Angelica. Angelica is a fawn colored pig, was also walking, paused for the scritches, and has turned towards the camera. Both man and pig appear entirely happy with this state of affairs.

Honestly, as far as possible. I was closer than normal for this photo but had terrain in my favor in case the moose became agitated at all. Here's the same shot without the zoom lens and you can see the width of the river and that I'm shooting down from a high bank.

Not my first moose of the year (or even today!) but the first one I could safely photograph. #wildlife

A young, healthy appearing moose of indeterminate gender stands in a swift moving but shallow river, next to a mossy bank. The moose is almost sideways to the camera (and parallel with the river bank and flow), but their head is up to look at me with one eye and keep an ear forward. The birch trees in the foreground have giant buds.

Tried taking the former owner's excessive number of chicken coops to the town burn pile. Got told we needed a "demolition permit" (no, we did not) but that's OK. I am handling this the old fashioned way.

A bunch of old scrap wood is on fire. The land around it is bare dirt. There are trees in the background but they aren't close. A single beam of sunlight is shining through the smoke.

Tonight I learned that Scooter the Cat is now afraid of thunder. I am entirely perplexed by this because he seemed just fine last Summer and DNGAF about thundersnow, but tonight? He went for an interior wall away from windows.
