Other top Republicans pitched in. Governor Scranton arranged a brief meeting and photo op with former president Eisenhower. My appointment was at Eisenhower's office in Gettysburg. Eisenhower's aide ushered me in. The former president was at his desk. He was wearing plaid slacks and a plaid jacket, unmatched. His hair was a little

whiter and thinner than it had been during his presidency, but otherwise he looked the same as his news photographs. He seemed relaxed and cordial. Even after his aide called him "General," I was still uncertain
what to call him.
The aide told Eisenhower that here was a lawyer who could answer a legal question that had been troubling him. Eisenhower proceeded to complain to me about recent Supreme Court decisions that made it more difficult for police officers to question and search suspects. "Why are these goll-darn Supreme Court decisions coming out?" he asked.
"Why doesn't Congress pass a law?"
Surprised that the ex-president thought Congress could pass a law to override a court decision on constitutional grounds, I explained that such a reversal would require a constitutional amendment. Eisenhower took it in. Then, still relaxed and chatty, he asked about the work of the Warren Commission and the chief justice's role as chairman. Eisenhower questioned whether it had been proper for Chief Justice Warren to serve on the commission.
Forgetting momentarily that I was speaking to a former president, the one who had appointed Earl Warren to the high court, I related Warren's rationale for taking the job. I went through the various officials who had in turn approached the chief justice, up to President Johnson himself, and detailed Johnson's request to Warren to serve his country in a time of crisis. Eisenhower grew impatient and scowled. "Warren did not have to do that. He is not under the president. If he were, I would have fired Warren a long time ago."
At the end of our talk, as a photographer clicked away, I showed Eisenhower a bound copy of the magistrates investigation report. Inno-cently, the former president said, "Yeah, this is like the story I read about an investigation of judges in Philadelphia."

This is quite a thing, for sure! 50 years of the Assads in power. 13 years of civil war. 6M+ refugees. Humanitarian, environmental, and economic catastrophe on a massive scale. But this stuff won’t just disappear as Assad himself did. Chaos and destabilization will likely continue.
