I asked Joshua Erlich, a civil rights lawyer and an excellent Bluesky poster, whether that kind of blatantly corrupt pardon party would hold up in court.
"So, if you straight up sell a pardon, is that a real one? Technically yes but it’s never been tested," Erlich told me. "Theoretically though, the pardon is literally a royal power derived from monarchy, so the basis for restricting them is pretty tenuous, at least if we’re going by history."
"To my mind, the path to resolving this questions for Trump is to treat his presidency itself as a legal nullity," Elrich continued. "He was never constitutionally elected because he wasn't eligible to run under the 14th Amendment. So the question is less about whether the pardons are legal and more about whether the person giving them is legally president in the first place."

Billionaire asshole Alexander Weir poses before the Stargate in the Cheyenne Mountain facility, boldly declaring, "ONCE WE TRANSFER THE GATE TO WEIR WORLDWIDE HEADQUARTERS, WE CAN START TO SEND SURVEYING PARTIES IMMEDIATELY!"

Weir continues, "INFINITE RESOURCES ARE OUT THERE, TO BE TAKEN!" while one of the soldiers carrying out his commands asks, "WON'T UNLIMITED GOLD CRASH THE PRICE OF GOLD?"

Incensed at the less-than-enthusiastic reception his men are giving his words, Weir threatens, "IF YOU WON'T MOVE IT, I'LL FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL, AND YOU'LL BE DISHONORABLY DISCHARGED!"

One of the soldiers replies, "THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS, SIR," and Weir claps back, "DON'T TELL ME HOW THINGS WORK! THE PRESIDENT SAID I HAVE TOTAL AUTHORITY!"

In the loading gate at the rear of Stargate Command, Weir tells the Stargate veterans opposing him, "THE GOVERNMENT'S

The Punisher ducks underneath the edge of the rooftop on which he's standing as the Sentinels below attack him with their laser blasts. An ominous ZRACK! cuts the air overhead. The Punisher finishes his earlier statement, "- to know what a housefly feels like!"

Two gigantic mutant-hunting Sentinels crouch near a burning building, while the sadistic Nazi fetishizer Crossbones laughs in the foreground. "Come out..." the Sentinels start to say.

"...with your hands up!" the Sentinels shout, as they take an enormous thooming stomp towards their target.

A red gloved hand rises from behind smoke, and its owner uses her telekinetic powers to lift debris from the floor in the dark around her. "I'll raise my hands..." she begins to say.

"...but you won't like what comes with 'em!" Rachel Summers declares, as more debris swirls into the air around her, and her eyes glow brightly as her Phoenix-related gifts come to her aid.

Jurists who are even partially faithful to the U.S. Constitution take one look at the unreality-based legal cases brought by the president's personal vengeance machine (DOJ) and say, what the fuck is this. The judges usually chastise the vengeance machines lawyers and throw the case out. Sometimes these cases then snake their way to the Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority that winks and nods at the right wing's unreality – all in bad faith, naturally.

Bothsidesism is so easily weaponized in this way. Within a couple weeks of January 6, there was a Democratic version of the insurrection (real) and a Republican version (unreal). Jammed into the social media algorithms controlled by Trump allies, these versions of January 6 were treated by most big media outlets as equal and opposite, the way Democratic Party and GOP tax policies might be treated. For a while the Democratic (real) version was the nation's reality, and the small business owners who tried and failed to overthrow the government were prosecuted and thrown into prison. Their lives were rightfully ruined. Justice was delivered in a piecemeal way until, of course, the right's version of the insurrection (unreal) pushed its way into the country's consciousness.

Since we're talking about American Hero Robert Smalls, there's a great NOAA report about the relationship between Smalls and the Planter itself, and the work done to identify the location of its remains: permanent.fdlp.gov/gpo67230/pla...

Smalls continued to command Planter past the end of the war, and the presence of both Captain Smalls and his ship were much noted during the grand ceremony of raising Fort Sumter's flag on April 14, 1865. Smalls captained a full ship of black passengers to witness the symbolic event, and one of them wrote, "Almost central in interest, the 'Planter, crowded almost to suffocation upon her three decks, with Gen. Saxton's freedmen, revealed her splashing paddles through the broken wheelhouse." Upon the top of the wheelhouse stood Robert Smalls, " ...a prince among them,
self-possessed, prompt and proud, giving his orders to the helmsman in ringing tones of command" (French 1865 43-44).

Advancing on Dr. Randall Stryker, bearing her two enormous space pistols, Nemesis tells him, "ON EVERY WORLD, MEN LOVE THEIR WIT. IT IS YOUR NEED TO COMPENSATE." Slightly aghast, the only thing Randall can say in response is, "I RESEMBLE THAT REMARK!"

Anthony Cage tries to bargain with Nemesis, saying, "WE COULD BE ALLIES, RATHER THAN SLAVES."

Nonplussed, Nemesis says, "ALLIES ARE USEFUL. SLAVES ARE EXPENDABLE."

Nemsis continues deriding then: "YOUR VITAL FORCE IS SPENT. YOUR MAGIC IS USELESS. WHY WOULD I ALLY WITH AN IMPOTENT MAGICIAN?"
