Been a ton of wildlife this trip! In addition to the grizzly earlier, we saw caribou several times today, and an arctic fox! One of my students saw a baby fox too
This might have been my favorite drive along the Dalton ever? Gorgeous morning north of Coldfoot to Atigun Pass, then several inches of snow from there to Sagwon. Oh, and, a herd of musk ox right next to the road!!! I only wish I had better photos
Spent the last day or so in Fairbanks, and we're off to Prudhoe Bay! Theres a cold front coming in, so we'll spend a night in Coldfoot first - 3-6 in of snow along parts of the Dalton Hwy north of the Brooks! My students this year had never been on a plane, but are having a blast in Alaska so dar!
Good round up of AC use in Europe, puts the latest heatwave into context. The mind-blowing stat is that the number of deaths caused by heat in Europe is roughly equivalent to the number of gun deaths in the US! www.carbonbrief.org/eight-facts-...
I found this rock on the Bay of Fundy. I still dont know anything about it except its so pretty!
Im teaching a seminar on fiber and textiles this fall (is it way outside my wheelhouse? Yes. Am I HYPED? YES) and Im going to blow these kids minds with how shitty clothes are now. Basically that meme of Ben Schwarz wearing a terrible version of Billy Crystal's sweater from When Harry Met Sally
Who needs a timeline cleanse? This little gremlin repeatedly dropped toys on my face last night. Good thing hes cute!
Found some fossils while doing stream surveys. Lots of ripples, shell imprints and various tracks, too! I think this is mostly devonian in age. I should probably pick up a fossil guide to PA/OH/NY one of these days
In between a bunch of meetings, catching up from being out of town for SFS, I also had two students start field work this week! They're mostly doing channel surveys prior to a big restoration project on a couple local streams. The big chop-and-drop on this one will be in Aug/Sept!
On my way to Sweden for BIOGEOMON! Very excited for this conference. Everything was running a little late today, starting with being trapped by the cat while finishing packing
This is a cat check point. Relinquish your most recent cat picture on your phone
Jenna found a very angry crayfish at the stream she's assessing for her senior comp!
Please enjoy the winners of this year's sticker contest in our dept! I especially love the vulture
Successful amphibian egg hunting! Any one want to ID the species? Theres two!
I sometimes think I brought home a mini golden retriever, not a cat. He's better at fetch than most dogs! Also very friendly and easy going and loves to cuddle.
More river orbs! Anyone recognize what city I'm starting at? I used to live there, and proceeds for the sale of these are going to mutual aid for the city/cities that had a real rough start to 2026
How can I possibly get out of bed when I have this creature purring literally in my ear
I mean, this is the crux of why the LLM boom feels so gross, right
Ok, but, cassowaries definitely belong in the upper left quadrat, right
I love these owl jars from Han Dynasty China (200 BCE-0CEish) that were on display at the Cleveland art museum when I visited last fall. One of my ceramics projects for this spring is to make something similar, inspired by these #SuperbOwls
Every time I bother Beaufort he makes this sound, which just incentives me to disturb his rest more. I dont think he minds much, at least
Instead of Groundhog Day, I'll wish everyone a happy #WorldWetlandsDay!
Look what arrived in the mail! A colorful cute geotimline game from @rowanmartindale.bsky.social !
