One of my all-time favorite books is this under-appreciated masterpiece. It’s about the phenomenology of our relationship to architecture—attics, cellars, dormers, domes, doorways. Composed in Bachelard’s trademark lyrical style, it grapples with our reaction to physical space. Fascinating stuff.

As good as he was in all of his roles, The Piano is still my favorite Sam Neill. He made you hate that guy, while still playing him as a fully-fleshed human being. The whole movie is brilliant, but Neill was the weird, uptight heart of it all. He will be missed.

It is a canon trans event to have far right freaks bankrolling you & then turning around and voting against you. People loooooove to judge us for it but I never see them opening their wallets!!! Shoutout to s*x workers everywhere forced to humanize their enemies just to make rent.

It is an absolute mindfvck too me that one of the reasons I have any semblance of financial security (& a lack of student loans) is because of this man.
At the time I had no idea who he was, and I only figured it out because another group or twinks leaked Lady G to the media. Some queers tried to grandstand critique this, saying we shouldn't "out" people. I believe bigots with power deserve no peace or privacy, especially when they hold public office. I'm glad they did it. Icons, forever.
Anyway, if you've ever enjoyed what I do on the internet know that it is in part because of Lindsey's generous donation over a decade ago. If I've ever sent you $ for something know that was kickstarted by the now deceased sissy senator from South Carolina.

Finally saw “Obsession.” Loved it. I’d been following Curry Barker’s career a little (I liked his YouTube humor) but this was a whole ‘nother level. And if Inde Navarrette doesn’t get an Oscar nom, the world is irreparably mucked up. Easily the best performance I’ve seen all year.

Fay Wray’s Peanut Butter Macaroni. A little odd-seeming, until we remember that a bunch of Thai, Chinese, and Indian dishes use nut butters as the base from which to add more flavor. For Thai noodles, add coconut milk, cilantro and sriracha, etc, etc. I like it. Good for Fay. A true legend.

BAKED MACARONI WITH PEANUT BUTTER

Do you have two meatless dinners every week in your family?
We
usually forego
the pleasure of
steaks, chops and roasts three times weekly which is one day more than the health fadists require.
How-
ever, on meatless daya the menu question is often a troublesome one.
Mother has concocted and looked up a number of unusualy appetizing dishes. one of which is macaroni and peanut butter.
1 cup macaroni, broken in one-inch pleces
i cups Crescent milk
3½ tablespoone peanut butter
1 teaspoon salt
% cup buttered bread crumbs
Cook macaront. In bolling salted water twenty minutes, or untll soft, drain in strainer, then pour over It one quart cold water to prevent
pleces from adhering: then put In buttered baking dish. Heat milk In double boller and add gradually to peanut butter.
Pour over macaroni,
cover and bake in slow oven forty minutes.
Remove cover, sprinkle
with crumbs, and bake untll crumbs are brown.
Serve with hot buttered graham muffins and combination salad.

I'm reading FAT CITY, Leonard Gardner's only novel, but it's a drop dead classic. It's a 1969 noirish/skid row boxing yarn, but the writing is so elemental & compact, it finds that perfect balance between minimalism & psychological depth. It's stunning. I finished it and immediately started it over.

I should mention on here that if any of my bluesky crew would like a media review copy of CRATER GIRL for blogs or podcasts or whatnot, just let me know ... The early reviews of the book are coming in. They seem promising.

Starts out as a mystery and slowly twist into a horror in a way that is incredibly gratifying. It is set in a poverty stricken small southern town that is neither as white nor as straight as we so often see depicted and as someone who grew up in and still mostly lives in small southern towns the author absolutely captures that setting. And we spend a lot of time there before first encountering strange beyond comprehension technologies, and then sliding further toward the unnameable.
We not on a cliffhanger, but with a door open to the possibility of something next, and I’d be interested to see what that was.

Meh. I love Stan, as everyone does, but LSD is pretty good for many, many folks. He’s speaking as an elite-level artist, but to be a good artist you have to be a good human, & psychedelics can truly help folks be good at being fully human. It’s a developmental thing. Not everyone is a genius, Stan.

Playboy: Have you ever used LSD or other so-called consciousness-expanding drugs?
Kubrick: No. I believe that drugs are basically of more use to the audience than to the artist. I think that the illusion of oneness with the universe, and absorption with the significance of every object in your environment, and the pervasive aura of peace and contentment is not the ideal state for an artist. It tranquilizes the creative personality, which thrives on conflict and on the clash and ferment of ideas.
The artist's transcendence must be within his own work; he should not impose any artificial barriers between himself and the mainspring of his subconscious. One of the things that's turned me against LSD is that all the people I know who use it have a peculiar inability to distinguish between things that are really interesting and stimulating and things that appear so in the state of universal bliss the drug induces on a "good" trip. They seem to completely lose their critical faculties and disengage themselves from some of the most stimulating areas of life. Perhaps when everything is beautiful, nothing is beautiful.

elliotpage I've been incredibly fortunate to train with @coachnol . He's a brilliant teacher, not just in the way he breaks down complex movements, but also in his strategic understanding of boxing and his thoughtful approach to the psychological side of the sport. Training with Nolan has become an essential part of my life. If you're in NYC and looking, I can't recommend him highly enough.
Just be warned, you may end up getting as hooked as 1 am.

Another cool recipe, this time by The Macca’s. Paul and Linda have been vegetarian advocates for so long and I love them for it, despite the fact that he helped write “Ebony & Ivory.” But we can do better than mere “cubed” veggie burgers—1lb of tofu, hand-crumbled, seasoned & fried is way better.

Vegetarian Recipe

Beefless Stroganoff
¾ pound mushrooms, sliced
1 large onion, chopped
1 teaspoon paprika
¼ cup butter or margarine
⅓ cup all-purpose flour
6 vegetable burgers, cubed
¾ cup white wine vegetable stock or water
¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons sour cream
½ teaspoon mild prepared mustard
• Sauté onion and mushrooms with paprika in butter or margarine in skillet for 10 minutes.
• Stir flour and burger cubes into mushroom mixture and sauté for 2 minutes, mixing well.
• Add wine and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently and adding stock or water if mixture appears dry.
• Blend in sour cream and mustard. Heat thoroughly but do not boil or simmer. Serve

Musk is a criminal who should be on trial for crimes against humanity.

cuts. In fact, I've met the kids who are dying, and I've talked to the families who lost children. In my columns, I've cited many, many names of people who have died because of Musk's aid cuts. A few examples:
"Yamah Freeman was a 23-year-old woman who died in childbirth because Musk cut funding for the diesel for ambulances in her part of Liberia. She couldn't get to a hospital and died as people were carrying her there. I talked to her parents and sister in their village.
"Gbessey Kiadu, age 1, died of malaria because of his cuts to malaria medication in Liberia. I talked to his mom in her village.
*Ibrahim Koroma, an infant, died of AIDS in Sierra Leone after he interrupted HIV supplies. I talked to health workers who cared for him.
"Achol Deng was an 8-year-old girl with HIV in South Sudan who died when Musk cut funding for the health care worker who provided her medicines. I talked to the healthcare workers.
I could go on and on. In almost every red TV village you go to in South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Sierra Leone or other countries I reported in, you find people dying because of aid cuts. I challenge Musk: Come with me on a reporting trip, and we'll talk to these moms and dads, and you'll see the dying children themselves. I think if you see the kids whose lives are at stake, maybe you'll change your mind.

Pretty masterful career management from from Robert Eggers. Not many artists can create a body of work that plays almost as one long single creation. I liked his work, but it was Nosferatu, of all things, that made me a true fan. He's got something new to say using even these well-tread tropes.

Bari Weiss is reportedly hiring British journalists to work for CBS because they’ll be better at helping US readers “reject an overly woke, liberal consensus on topics such as Israel and trans issues.” Please do. That worked out so fabulously well for Keir Starmer.

A CBS News source, describing Weiss's interest in British journalists, said: "They do the kind of things that Bari is looking for; it's not puff pieces and kid gloves."
