Found in a secondhand bookshop today. I used to believe COVID was real, but a book with two subtitles and a review from Claude AI calling it ‘a comprehensive guide to Spiritual Warfare’ can’t be wrong.

Evening suit. Aquascutum, London, 1988. Purple and pink wool brocade and shot-silk dinner suit with shot-silk cloak. Ref T.1592:1, V & A Museum.

Purple and deep pink brocade dinner suit, the jacket with scalloped peplum, lower in the back than the front. Removable purple and pink shot-silk cuffs with frills and a removable pleated shot-silk dicky are attached inside neckline and sleeves with covered press-studs. The same silk covers the buttons down the front of the jacket. The skirt is full length and slim cut, the back with a long panel extendng into a short train. Worn with a loose, flowing shot-silk taffeta cloak, sleeveless, with gathered shoulders.

The question of deception must also be raised in the
context of how transsexuals who claim to be lesbian-femi
nists obtained surgery in the first place. Since all trans
sexuals have to “pass” as feminine in order to qualify for
surgery, so-called lesbian-feminist transsexuals either had
to lie to the therapists and doctors, or they had a con
version experience after surgery. I am highly dubious of
such conversions, and the other alternative, deception,
raises serious problems, of course.

I found something extremely cursed in the V & A archive and it’s your problem now (Michael Leonard, 1980)

In November 1911 a crowd of ~3000 people gathered outside Wellington’s DIC department store to view a woman modelling a harem skirt in the display window. As soon as she appeared there was a surge towards the window ‘until the great panes of plate glass vibrated ominously.’ Ref PS.004134, Te Papa.

So-called harem pants were introduced by French fashion designer Paul Poiret in 1911 and caused a worldwide sensation. Although cycling bloomers or breeches for women had appeared in the 1890s, the idea of women wearing trousers remained very controversial, and for Edwardians the Middle Eastern harem came with additional connotations of sexual immorality. In practice, the pants were largely covered with a skirt, hence the more common name ‘harem skirt’. Nevertheless, in November 1911 a crowd variously estimated as between one and three thousand people gathered outside Wellington’s DIC department store to view a veiled woman modelling the outfit in the display window. As soon as she appeared there was such a surge towards the window that there were fears it would break. The woman beat a retreat, but after police cleared a space she returned. Again, the crowd became excited and pressed forward ‘until the great panes of plate glass vibrated ominously.’1 This time the show was cancelled. A ‘disgraceful display of horse-play and hooliganism’ by the men and boys present followed, according to the Evening Post.

Mourning card for Hercules Nelson, aged one. I couldn't find the cause of death, but I suspect typhoid- the water supply and milk were often contaminated with Salmonella enterica in the 19th century, and was a leading cause of death for children under five. Ref GH002290/4, Te Papa.

Gladys Eileen Pidgeon (1906-2002). The photo was taken following her appearance at the inaugural British Empire Games, the only woman selected for the NZ team. The government did not want a single woman on the team because it would require the additional expense of a chaperone. Ref GH026490, Te Papa

Pidgeon, who had worked as a clerk at Milne & Choyce department store since she was 14, was the New Zealand 220 yards breast stroke champion from 1925 and 1931, with the exception of 1929 when she came second to Lily Copplestone. In 1930, she won a place on the New Zealand team that travelled to the first British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada. She was the only female selected. As Peter Kitchen wrote in her obituary, 'being named in the team, however, proved problematic. The impediment was the government's unwillingness to have a single woman on the team because it would require the additional expense of a chaperone.' (First Kiwi Woman at Empire Games', The Dominion Post, 28 November 2002, B7). Pidgeon was only allowed on the team after her mother, Jane, agreed to pay her own way in order to chaperone her daughter.

Although recording a personal best at the 1930 Empire Games, she finished sixth in the final of the 200 yards breast stroke, which was won by Cecelia Wolstenholme of England in world-record time of 2 minutes and 54.6 seconds. Both Wolstenholme and the second place winner were teenagers. Pidgeon recalls being stunned by their youth, and also by the number of coaches, managers, medical staff and masseurs in attendance of the other teams. On her return, she pleaded with the New Zealand swimming authorities to get people into the sport earlier (Kitchen, 2002). New Zealand won three gold, four silver and two bronze medals at the games.

At Whare Komiti, Haerehuka, King Country Photo by Alfred Burton, 4th June 1885. This photograph of unidentified women and children was taken at Haerehuka, and the subjects are probably the wives and children of the King Movement chiefs. Ref O.000798, Te Papa.

During the 1880s, Ngāti Maniapoto leaders were relaxing their opposition to a European presence in the region. Under pressure to open up the territory for settlement, they eventually agreed to put their lands before the Native Land Court and to allow the construction of the main trunk railway line. Land sales and surveys, like the trip during which Burton took this photograph, quickly followed. Burton travelled with C E Rochfort, a surveyor for the rail line who was engaged in surveying a river steamer route to connect with the railway.

At Whare Komiti belongs to a series of photographs that Burton called 'The Maori at Home'. It was an important project since few photographs of Māori had previously been taken outside the portrait studio. Images like At Whare Komiti provide an important insight into social and cultural details of Māori life during a time of significant change. Through such journeys, the Dunedin firm of Burton Brothers built up a comprehensive photographic record of New Zealand in the nineteenth century. Their work was continued into the twentieth century by Burton's former partner Thomas Muir, who formed Muir and Moodie in 1898. All the Burton negatives were purchased by Dominion Museum in 1943.
