Whitburn, NE England. Mostly birds and dreadful photographs, but a bit of other stuff too...
1cy Casp on the rocks below Souter lighthouse this afternoon #NEbirding #UKbirding #gulls
Hummingbird Hawk-moth has been recorded in the garden on 18 days so far this year (our record is 22). This is the first one that's settled. Also Greenshank W. over this evening.
Playing with the macro. Birds are way too easy so I'm not gonna bother with 'em 🤣😂🤣😂🫣🤔. A Hummingbird Hawk-moth in the garden (after a sighting yesterday and 2 the previous day). #moths
Ruddy Darter in the garden. A 'rare' here - only 2 or 3 previous records #odonata
Sedge and Reed Warblers both currently around my garden pond. Sedge is almost annual from here but it's the first this year, Reed has about 4 previous records.
My first garden Volucella zonaria of the year. Also Hummingbird Hawk-moth today, and several very fresh Painted Lady.
Broad-bodied Chaser and a couple of Hummingbird Hawk- moths in the garden today.
The second garden Hummingbird Hawk-moth of the year (after one in late May). #migrantlepidoptera
Some vegetation, some water, and a bit of a splodge. The Red-necked Phal. at Outstrays was a bit tricky to get pics of but after missing it/one at Kilnsea earlier, it made me very happy anyway 😃. Also P-b Brent (3 ads at Kilnsea earlier too) and Spoonbill.
There have been males about for a week or so but yesterday's was my first female Orange Tip in the garden, also a Painted Lady in the evening - the earliest I've ever seen here @ukbutterflies.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
If you can view these as 'Motion Picture' you might be able to work out what this is! 😄 If not, it's the Marsh Sandpiper at Boldon Flats this evening, a flippin' great find by Barry Stidolph! 👌 👍. It was a little dark for pics 😏 #NEbirding
Blimey, that rare?! OK Tom, it was here, in the pines on the E side of the car park before being pushed into the trees by the pond by a Goldcrest 👍
A heads-up @stuartsbirding.bsky.social #Lancsbirding Winter-plumaged dowitcher sp. at Banks Marsh briefly, flew and landed somewhere near the pin, but I can't find the bloody thing and have to leave 😢 😫.
Mistle Thrush isn't a regular 'in the garden' singer, so this one this a.m. was tremendous 😀. Also our first Chiffchaff of the year here.
Another trip up to see the Taiga's nr. Budle this afternoon - unfortunately they spent most of the time sleeping. 4 Tundra's and 2 Russian White-fronts at Monk's House pool, 5 Long-tailed Ducks and 5 Slav. Grebes off Ross Links, and 200+ Russian White-fronts in the Long Nanny-Turgall area #NEbirding
Some of the 11 Taigas at Hoppen Kiln Flash this a.m. Absolutely amazing things, and so close 😃. A bit of variation in bill structure and there's at least one of 'em I'd struggle with if I saw it by itself. One of them was repeatedly shaking it's head, which is a worry😕. #NEbirding
17 Tundra Beans in the field NW of Monk's House pool this a.m., also a bonus 12 Pale-bellied Brents #NEbirding
232 Russian Whitefronts at The Long Nanny - Tughall this a.m. Only countable when down in the flooded area. There was a possible 2cy Greenland with Pinks in the flooded area, but I couldn't find it (or even see most of the birds) when they moved to the fields @gary-woodburn.bsky.social
The close White-billed Diver was really close at Blyth late a.m. The one off the beach was quite distant and last seen disappearing into the heat-haze near St Mary's Island. Awesome.
@dgbirdnews.bsky.social @marshdagger.bsky.social 3 ad. and a 2cy Russian Whitefront with Pinkfeet, here...
A flying visit to West Freugh this afternoon. 139 Greenland Wfs in a single flock, with a single ad. Russian in 'em. Also 3 ad. and a 2cy Russian Wf with Pinkfeet at Braehead @dgbirdnews.bsky.social @marshdagger.bsky.social
@dgbirdnews.bsky.social @marshdagger.bsky.social 2 ad. Russian Whitefronts with Pinkfeet, here...
Two groups of Greenland Whitefronts at West Freugh this afternoon totalling 60 (51 and 9), with a single ad. Russian Wf with the 9, and 3 ad Russians with the 51. Absolutely brilliant! @marshdagger.bsky.social @dgbirdnews.bsky.social
@dgbirdnews.bsky.social @marshdagger.bsky.social A tight group of 3 Tundra Beans with the Pinkfeet this afternoon, distant and horrible to get pics of due to the wind #UKbirding here...
82 Russian Whitefronts off Cleadon Lane, Whitburn late a.m., then went E. 23-24 just S of Cleadon at about midday (initially seen arriving from the N over Whitburn). It's all go on the Whitefrontfront #NEbirding @durhambirdclub.bsky.social
4 Tundra Beans and 54 Russian Whitefronts still in the field adjacent to the flood, Washington, here... #NEbirding @durhambirdclub.bsky.social
