What is happening this week? Really was not expecting an email to invite me to see an upcoming theatre production of A Tale of Two Cities. Whilst I couldn't attend the press night, as it's when I'm at the Jane Austen Festival, they have instead offered me complimentary tickets to a later showing.
Just finished a talk with the lovely Dronfield Men’s Probus Club. Very welcoming group and will definitely be back! Now to have lunch in the nearby Dronfield Hall Barn. Nothing better than talking about history and going to a historical place for lunch after! #dronfield #HistorySpeaker #cafe
Just received this lovely feedback from Isobel about the Georgian Derby Tour in collaboration with Derby Museums. The next Georgian Derby tour with the Museums is sold out. You can still book on one of my tours. Tickets can be booked by the Eventbrite link below. www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/georgian-d...
I finally have a date and venue for a Regency ball in Derbyshire! This is The Whitworth in Darley Dale, near Chatsworth and Matlock. It falls on Saturday 26th June 2027. If the weather is good, we are also hoping to have a picnic. Would people come when the tickets become available?
Working on a new talk that I will be debuting next month. A bit nervous about this one as it's a new topic for me, but without reading up on Lucien, I would never have found about about the Napoleonic Prisoners of War local to me. Plus any excuse to talk about Ludlow again!
I was reminded that it's a year today since I got Tony Bear! He's named after Tony Page, a World War Two Pilot, who died in 1940. In June, Tony Bear visited the Battle of Britain Museum in Hawkinge to see items connected to his namesake, as well as Tony's grave just a minute away from the museum.
How are we in July already?! Well the July Newsletter is now live, full of all things historical, including a lot about things Anthony Woodville and Ludlow related. #newsletter #history open.substack.com/pub/voyagero...
#OTD in 1483, Anthony Woodville was executed alongside his nephew, Richard Grey and Thomas Vaughan, at Pontefract Castle. If you would rather remember him how he lived, please read my biography on him: Anthony Woodville: Sophisticate or Schemer. #anthonywoodville #WarsoftheRoses #fifteenthcentury
All set up ready at Castle Bookshop in Ludlow to talk about Anthony Woodville’s last ten years here in charge of his nephew, Edward, Prince of Wales. #anthonywoodville #ludlow #shropshire #warsoftheroses
A fabulous and unexpected find today in Primark! Can you tell which is my favourite Bridgerton brother? 😉 #Bridgerton #funkopop #collectibles
On Saturday at 6pm, I’ll be doing my third talk at the Castle Bookshop in Ludlow. I will be talking about the education of Edward, Prince of Wales, whilst he was at Ludlow Castle. He was under the charge of his uncle, Anthony Woodville, who my biography is about. Pop along and learn more.
Lately I have been having a few enquiries about where I will be talking on Anthony Woodville. Despite having a biography about him, I don't get many bookings for this. I only have two in the diary at the moment. If you know any venues or groups that would be interested, please let them know!
An absolutely fabulous evening last night listening to Dr Janina Ramirez talking on Legenda, women who shaped European nationhoods myths, at Derby Book Festival. As enjoyable as ever and looking forward to finding some new historical women to champion.
I’ve been good this holiday, only purchased 5 books for myself! This was one of them. Before going away, I watched a documentary on the Spitfire. It included Mary Ellis, one of the best Air Transport Auxiliary pilots.
Photos of St Martin’s Church at Great Mongeham, not far from Deal. This is the burial place of Captain Maynard, who was in charge of the crew who fought Blackbeard in his last fight. Hopefully some of these photos will make it into the book I’m currently working on.
With a month to go, thought I had better advertise that I will be at Buxton for Books, hosted by Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust, on Saturday 13th June. I will have a stall and also will be doing a short talk on Anthony Woodville and Edward Prince of Wales at 3:15pm.
A big thank you to Heanor Local History Society for hosting me last night to talk about Anthony Babington to an audience of over 70 people.
Another lovely morning for a private Georgian Derby tour. ☀️☀️ #georgian #derby #GuidedTours #historytours #tourguide
Now that I've officially signed the contract, I feel I can now make an announcement. I have just signed for a book entitled 'Pirates and Plunderers: How Criminals Became Maritime Legends', with a deadline of July 2027, for Pen and Sword Books.
Yesterday I was speaking to Chesterfield & District Local History Society on Mary Seacole, Betsi Cadwaladr and Florence Nightingale. Thank you for hosting me and for everyone for listening to me rattle on about prejudices against female nurses. #victorian #nineteenthcentury #womenshistory
Had my first private tour of the season today in Belper. The issue is there’s a fantastic charity bookshop on the route. I promise I did donate some and it was more than I purchased! #bookhauls #books
The first Georgian Derby tour of the season is done. Thankfully the bad weather held off. Now need a giant mug of tea! #derby #derbyshire #tour #GuidedTours
I have wholeheartedly enjoyed The Other Bennet Sister so much! Thank you for being the tonic I needed at the moment. Only depressing thing is that even Mary Bennet is getting more romantic action than you. 😂
April’s newsletter is now out, detailing all things history related in terms of tours, talks and history blog. Do read and subscribe too! voyagerofhistory.substack.com/p/danielle-b...
I've been doing a bit of research into St Bart's Hospital in London lately. I'm especially interested in what it was like during the Fifteenth Century, through to the Reformation. I will turn it into a new talk. Image Credit: St Bartholomew’s Hospital: (1720), Public Domain via Wellcome Trust.
I’ve made it through my 3 talks in 3 days. Think I need a good lie down now! Was glad to share Margaret Cavendish with two groups yesterday and today too. Always love sharing her with new audiences. Even more appropriate for Women’s History Month!
Did anyone watch The Other Bennet Sister on the BBC tonight? I know of the book, based on Mary Bennet, from Pride and Prejudice, my favourite book, but haven’t read it. Really enjoyed the show so far. Only thing is I didn’t quite believe the actors playing Bingley and Darcy. Can’t have everything!
I know I’ve mentioned this book a lot before, but I’ve just finished it and do feel a bit bereft now. Honestly the best historical fiction book I’ve read in ages! A bit of everything in there: love, mystery, Battle of Britain pilots, art. Very engrossing and hard to put down!
Happy #internationalwomensday! I have always loved researching women, so it’s always hard for me to choose some of my favourites. Here’s 4 of them: Mardie Hodgson, Mary Seacole, Madam CJ Walker and Margaret Cavendish. #WomensHistoryMonth #womenshistory
