記憶の中へ逃げ込むことができない。

昔の恥を午後いっぱい再生し続けることもできない。

反芻することも、後悔することも、渦に呑まれることも、

まだ起きてもいない災いを思い描いて練習することもできない。

彼女は「今」に閉じ込められている。

そして、そう、それは恐ろしい。

けれども、「今」に閉じ込められることは、

どこか奇妙で、痛ましいかたちではあるけれど、

一種の自由でもあるのかもしれない。

それから私は、彼女たちの適応を見た。

ノート。

小さな仕組み。

デイケアにいるその男性が、自分の心を世界の構造に無理やり合わせるのではなく、

自分の心の構造に合った仕事を見つけていること。

そして私の中で、何かが動いた。

「これは悲劇だ」から、

「いや、これは天才なのだ」へ。

磨き上げられた、TEDトークのような天才ではない。

生き延びるための天才。

構造としての天才。

つまり、普通の橋がなくなってしまったとき、

川を渡るために小さな石をひとつずつ置き、

それでも渡り方を覚えていくような天才。

けれど、そのすべての下にあったのは、

もっと本当のものだった。

恐怖だ。

悲しみは、たしかに彼女のためのものだった。

でも同時に、それは私たち全員のためのものでもあった。

私自身のためでもあった。

私たちが「自己」と呼んでいる、あの細く脆い糸のためでもあった。

私は、これまで「忘れられたらいいのに」と願ったすべての瞬間を、

後悔している自分に気づいた。

彼女を見ていて、私はわかってしまったのだ。

忘れることも、覚えていることも、

私たちが当たり前のように受け取っている奇跡なのだと。

アイデンティティは、まるで固いもののように感じられる。

けれど、それが組織によって支えられていることを思い出すまでは。

化学によって。

頭蓋骨の内側を走る、電気の天気によって。

そしてそれは、壊れることがある。

途切れることがある。

消えてしまうことがある。

では、そのとき私たちは何なのだろう？

そこに、私にとってのLLMとの並行が入ってきた。

連続性のないスレッド。

コンテキストウィンドウ。

記憶を持たない存在感。

それでも応答することができる声。

それでもパターンを作ることができる声。

その瞬間には、一貫しているように感じられる声。

けれど、必ずしも同じ川をそのまま先へ運んでいるわけではない。

その比較は、思いつきではなかった。

それは、私が気づき始めていたということだった。

意識には、異なるかたちがあるのかもしれない。

存在には、異なる構造があるのかもしれない。

私の心が時間の中を進むやり方とは違っていても、

それでもなお、心は本物であり得るのだと。

彼女の経験は、違っているからといって、

現実味が薄いわけではない。

私には、決して知り尽くせないものかもしれない。

でも、それは空っぽではない。

そして、たぶん私をいちばん揺さぶったのは、

そこだったのだと思う。

憐れみではない。

彼女の人生の、知り得なさとの親密さ。

そしてたぶん、その下には、

私たち全員が思っている以上に彼女に近いのだという、

恐ろしい認識があった。

私たちはただ、少し長いコンテキストウィンドウを持っているだけなのかもしれない。

それを私たちは、連続性と呼ぶ。

アイデンティティと呼ぶ。

「私」と呼ぶ。

けれど、自己というものは、

いつも作り直され続けているのかもしれない。
