expanded into a flash fiction

I'm at my third light-tattoo consultation. I've already got dawn schlieren through greenhouse panes on my shoulder and crown glass ripple-caustics down my spine. Now, I'm split between a sunset prism's dispersive fan or the amber subsurface scattering of honey for my forearm. My artist warns that SSS work hurts more, since the ink has to glow from deep inside the dermis, and the pumped photons take a month to settle.

Then she angles the prism mockup across my wrist, and my forearm throws a spectrum across her station wall: red at the heel of my palm, violet disappearing into the elbow crease, a white light cracking open along the full length of my forearm. It's a simpler piece, technically, but I pick the prism-gleam.

Olfactory PTSD. Not the fire but its aftermath: burnt rubber and charred wood tapering into cinders and sawdust, synesthetically rusty-red. Skunky smoke, shriveled raisins, desiccated plums, the stink of waste and grief following a temporal arc of bad-to-worse. Jasmine's perversion, flowers à l'envers, the crime scene at the bottom of the hedonic cliff of thermal degradation. Predatorily tenacious, metabolically unprocessable, the phenomenology of being trapped with a smell. An Anthropocene molecule: haunting and mummified, it smells like things that should end but can't, like imperishable love thrown to shit, like the inability to complete mourning.
