Independent researchers have shown that claims about ‘AI for sustainability’ are typically speculative and poorly-evidenced. 18 They also overlook inconvenient dynamics such as the Jevons paradox (where efficiency improvements often increase aggregate resource consumption, by reducing costs).19 Yet these critiques point to a more fundamental problem. In a global economy that is not organised around planetary boundaries and human needs, but economic growth and private profit, there is no reason to believe that AI tools which are predominantly being developed on a commercial basis (and which will have to be astronomically profitable to justify the vast capital investments involved) will be used only or primarily for environmentally beneficial activities. Any scientific breakthroughs and efficiency gains enabled by AI are as likely to be used to scale up unsustainable business activities as to promote sustainability. 20 In fact, given the greater profitability of environmentally-harmful sectors like fossil fuels and mining and the greater resources of the actors responsible,21 it is far more likely that AI will be used for the former
