I think if we lived in a society in which we embedded a sense of respect and responsibility to Indigenous peoples, we may have laws that are broad based, that may deal with these very specific issues in which Indigenous peoples are targeted, but unfortunately we don't live in that situation. We don't live in that society. And for such a long period of history, in virtually every single corner of this country, the normalization of hating Indigenous peoples, perhaps we've seen this the most evident in government, in the justice system, in the schools that we exist within. I would add to that, just, just quickly as a historian, I mean, this is essentially how Canada's hate speech laws came into being in the first place. The rampant rise of neo-Nazism, anti- antisemitism, you know, prompted a number of folks to feel that the limitation on that speech was justified in that, in that moment. I mean, the rise of anti-Indigenous racism that we are seeing, people will say this is just mean things that people say on the internet. That is not true. You know, Niigaan and I live in a city where there was a serial killer targeting Indigenous women who was posting residential school denialism at the time of his murders. Public demands directly to the Calgary and Edmonton libraries have been ignored, and we are again calling for the book to be removed from every library in Alberta immediately. Allowing blatant fiction to be marketed as fact is unacceptable in any capacity and opens the door for more harm to everyone. When misinformation is allowed to be spread in this way the truth is endangered for all.
We are aware of the threat that the provincial government’s Bill 28 carries and the dangerous level of authority an ideological government could impose. These are the moments that broader understanding of colonial systems is required, a level of leadership that can see why governments cannot have the right to restrict information, such as book bans, while also having the integrity to not use this legislation to camouflage hate speech under Intellectual Freedom.

Reconciliation is the responsibility of all Canadians. When settler organizations support hate groups while claiming to support, or even advocate, for Reconciliation as an organization this exposes the disconnect between our values and our actions.

Alberta libraries carrying a hate speech book is not an innocent act, it represents the values held by settler colonial institutions and invalidates all other acts of reconciliation.

Our public libraries should be the community leaders that live by example, understanding that Holocaust denialism is hate speech and not applying the same principal to Residential School denialism is a clear statement of support of the dehumanization of the people who belong to the Land upon which the libraries are situated.

If the library feels steady the principals applied to approve books such as this one are absent of racism, they should feel confident that a panel made exclusively of Indigenous peoples are better suited to make these decisions than non-Indigenous and turn this review over to Indigenous communities to form a panel.
