Found the final resting place of my Dads cousin, who was killed in a B17 over Germany in WW2. But many American families have someone like that in their family history. Investigate. Find out. Visit their graves. It can leave you feeling connected to what really matters. It did for me. #history #ww2

Yesterday we paid respects to my Dad's first cousin, of whom he spoke often. Ray L Zirbel was shot down in a B17 over Germany November 2 1944. Today he rests in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, alongside thousands of others who gave their all to defeat fascism. #history #ww2

A whole new patch of milk weed popped up in a mulch bed next to our garage this year.

I have to admit, today's hike took everything out of me that I had to give. It was 8.5 miles, with temp at 86 F (30 C). I've hiked much farther. I've hiked at hotter temps. But I needed to take multiple long rest breaks to get it done. I think it was the long stretches exposed to the sun. #hiking

Some days I like to push it hard on my hikes, going as far and fast as I can. Some days I like to just meander along, enjoying the trees, the birds, and the breeze when I can find it. Today was more of the latter. Still, I hiked 5.5 miles in 2 hours 15 minutes. Temp was 82 F (28 C). #hiking

Every 4th of July my adult son and a couple dozen of his buddies play a baseball game. This year the Balding Eagles defeated the Red, White, and Bloomers 21 to 14. Not a ballplayer among them! But its fun. :-)

Peaceful out on the trail today, but hot and humid. 86 F (30 C). I hiked 4.5 miles in an hour and 50 minutes. Then I went home and took a nap. :-)

Busy with family stuff. Not fun stuff. So thought I'd relax by by reliving my float trip on the Milwaukee River last week.

One of the 2 logjams I had to drag my kayak around on Thursday's 10 mile paddle on the Milwaukee River between Kewaskum and West Bend, WI. This one was massive.

Yesterday I saw this pretty doe walking in the Milwaukee River, followed by 2 spotted fawns. Video is shaky because I took it from a kayak. Also saw a bald eagle, kingfishers, ducks, red cardinal, turtles, and smallmouth bass darting away underwater.

Here's my garbage harvest from my 10 mile kayak paddle on the Milwaukee River today. It was a bumper crop! I pull it from the river, take it home, and dispose of it properly.

I carry water on my hikes, obviously, but there's nothing like fresh, cool drinking water pumped straight out of the ground. Have a sip! I had errands today, but still had time for 5.2 miles hiking on the #IceAgeTrail east of Kewaskum, WI. The water pump came at the 4 mile mark.

Yesterday I came across this old abandoned bridge in the middle of the marsh and trees. Whatever road it was connected to is long gone and forgotten. Once upon a time it was a way for people to get from here to there. Now it's a relic, a reminder that nothing lasts forever.

Today I was back on the East Branch of the Milwaukee River with my kayak. Did 4 miles of paddling and dragging the kayak through the woods to get around down trees across the stream. Fun! Then I paddled a half mile on the West Branch, which is navigable.

The fruit of the mayapple. Its edible when ripe. But I rarely see ripe ones. I think the critters get them all first.

An old horse drawn dump rake, abandoned in the woods. Its on a steep, rocky, unfarmable hillside. I suspect some farmer dragged it up there and left it, when it was broken, the farm was broken, or he was broken. I hiked 6.2 miles in 2 hours today, with no breaks.

My 8 miles on the East Branch of the Milwaukee River yesterday had some pretty paddling. But there was also a lot of dragging over rocks, and over, under, or around fallen trees. Not what most people would consider a navigable stream. I have no idea why I enjoy this sort of thing! :-)

Here is some of the junk I pulled out of the river today, as I was kayaking. The two big pieces I lugged along for about 5 miles. Frankly, it was a PITA, but felt good when I was able to properly dispose of it at home.

Started today with a 4.37 mile bike ride and followed that with an 8 mile paddle on the East Branch of the Milwaukee River back to my starting point. And paddle is not totally accurate. A lot of time was spent dragging my kayak over rocks and downed trees. Quite a workout. #kayaking #biking
