Not to sound snobby or whatever but this teacher institute has been WONDERFUL. It is invigorating to have rigorous academic discussion with intelligent people about important things. Most teacher PD I go to feels more like cult recruitment/retainment and this has been so great

THE ONLY ONE LEFT piles on the plot twists, and the house is a character the way the island of Widow’s Bay is a character. Intergenerational trauma and mystery as well as some nice comeuppance make this a good readalike imo
THE HOLLOW PLACES is Horror!Narnia but also has a badass Patricia-type main character who handles shit while being scared as hell the whole time
PLAY NICE is probably the *least* like Widow’s Bay in many ways but I also feel like the bloodline/must protect my family/demonic entity aspects are great and it has some of the humor that makes Widow’s Bay work so well
A LAND SO WIDE is probably the closest readalike on the list with such hits as “powerful dark entity” and “leaders of small village make a pact with the devil” and “magical perimeter citizens cannot cross” but also there’s a romance element
YOURE NOT SUPPOSED TO DIE TONIGHT by Kalynn Bayron is a horror romp about an escape-room style summer camp that goes horribly wrong. It gives a lot of the same “what the fuck!!!” moments as Widow’s Bay and we love a badass final girl

Indie bookstore day was a rousing success. We went to four stores and ended with an engorgement of breadsticks before napping the rest of the day. 10/10 will do again

Book 44/150: WITCHES ABROAD. This was my first Terry Pratchett book and I’m happy to report it was literally perfect. 5⭐️
Book 43/150: SMALL GAME. I think if I had not read so many Nora Roberts books where there’s some sick twisted dude watching your every move I would have enjoyed this more. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop instead of appreciating the one that was already on the (forest) floor. 3.5⭐️
Sunday afternoon read - ICARUS by K. Ancrum. Can def see why this thrilling queer art heist YA novel won the HS Sequoyah book award! Ancrum pulls you in from page one and doesn’t let go. 4⭐️
My crafting group this month was button-themed. I made these cutie little earrings and can’t wait to wear em out!
