Unfortunately, I'm not able to vote in my home state of TX anymore starting this year (NYC-bound for a PhD in Science Edu before Nov). But you best believe I'm getting as many ppl I know to register!💪 Texas is not a deep-red state, it's a voter suppressed one. Time to start flippin' tables.😉

A younger me in overalls (c. late 90s, early 2000s) staring out in utter awe at an endless expanse of Texas bluebonnet wildflowers (the state flower).

They are a common sight along Texas highways in the spring, and were planted as part of the 1965 "Highway Beautification Act", also known as the "Lady Bird's Bill" after First Lady Ladybird Johnson (wife of President LBJ, who were both Texan).

Travis County (so for Austin, my hometown) began including an educational insert to bring attention to what was needed. For TX, you'll get a voter registration card in the physical mail (looks like below) - if you don't just check online to see that you are registered. Take a photo of the info & keep the card safe (remember the VUID, many come in handy later). You DO NOT send this back or need it with you to vote.

[Again, get this done as EARLY as possible - like months before voting day (mid August @ latest), TODAY is better! Speaking from experience, back-and-forth snail mail takes ages there are almost always little hiccups that slow things down. Again, YMMV depending on which state you vote in. 🙃]

Context: Texan born 'n raised, been voting from abroad since 2016. Cus despite challenges, it's just that freaking important. Otherwise, why would so many ppl inc. Paxton & my neighboring Rep. Chip Roy be pushing SAVE Act type BS to try & stop me? 🫠 (can kinda feel personal ngl... anyhoo)

Screenshot of H.R.22 the "SAVE act" which would require all to appear in person at an election office with an extremely restrictive set of qualifying documents (note: a drivers license or other REAL ID would not be enough. Only a a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a certified birth certificate paired with a photo ID, a naturalization certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad would count). This would virtually make all voting from abroad and mail in ballots impossible.

Fun Easter Egg for your next HKBM trip!🐣 See that big insect case when you enter? Look toward the bottom left, near glass sticker, between the stick insect legs for a green fly 🪰 Notice the Col. R. Wang from 3-X-2018 label? Yeah, that’s one I caught & pinned for my 1st ever insect collection. 🥹

A large (think A2 size) wood and glass case sitting on a metal storage cabinet at waist level. Inside the case is a whole range of insects (different size, shape, color, order etc) from tiny Beatles to massive butterflies to showcase HK biodiversity!

The insect I’m describing. A metallic green fly (order Diptera), expertly pinned to showcase clear features such as its single pair of wings (where the order name comes from, as its hind wings have evolved into halteres), large compound eyes and short bristles/setae.

The pin also contains 3 tiny paper labels with information on its collection (location, GPS coordinates, altitude, date and collector name - me!), ID information on the specimen (order, family, IDer) and finally a tag with a museum collection number used to database it.

BTW Google Lens "thinks"/wants to convince you it's a... - Tortoise beetle (❌ shape) - 𝘊. 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 / scale insect (❌ size & leaf place) - 𝘗. 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴/Surinam cockroach nymph ( ❌ hairy legs) - Genus 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘴 / Pill Cockroach (❌... everything? How did it get roly-poly roach?! 🫠) (cont.)

Google Lens with no additional words guessing tortoise beetle due to:
- "shield-like shells" (not actually a beetle order/Coleoptera identifier, but rather for the correct true bugs order/Hemiptera
-Found on foliage (true of many beetle)
-Orange or brown (notoriously bad feature for insect ID due to evolutionary pressures)
-Orchid leaves (not accurate).

Sources reddit and facebook, which often have misidentified insect photos.

Google Lens + the prompt "insect" guessing a soft scale insect due to:
- stationary (of course, it's a photo?)
- oval (describes many insects)
-waxy "scales" (not accurate. blurry photo not shiny or scales, more matte in texture.)
-midribs of leave and stems (insect in this case resting on leaf surface, not underside)

Size also very off, scale insects are mm big, not cm big.

Google lens + zoomed focus on insect + "insect ID" prompt guessing Surinam cockroach nymph due to:
- Oval body (see previous photos descriptions)
- Flattened shape (useful, but describes many types of insects.)
- Color (though even admits they are normally black headed with brown wings, none of which describe the pictured insect.

Google Lens guesses based off of image + plural "insects" prompt to try and get more guesses at once. As before, many of the descriptions are not characteristics used to identify insects.

The last two bullet points of pill cockroach and mexican bean beetle are particular egregious, in that they have VERY characteristic features not seen in the image.
- Clear body segments and ability to roll into a ball shape for the former (similar to roly-poly isopod bugs)
- Dotted black spots (its a lady bug) and North American distribution of the latter (not Hong Kong where the image was taken).

Huh, not really in 🇹🇼! For my mom's gen, a bob even = default "school hair" & my GMa's gen all have "阿嬤" haircuts now (google it😅). Many TW 🚺 have short hair that would be "boy-ish" in the West. From Olympians like Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) to Vice Pres Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) to Singer Amber Kuo (郭采潔) etc.

My hastily doodled, pen-sketch attempt at “Mind Horse”. ✍️ No idea why horses 🐎 are so dang tricky but my brain just “gets” hedgehogs 🦔 ?? Like I’ve ridden horses many times before but never seen IRL nor lived anywhere hedgehogs are native. 🤣 Yet Brain like “Yup. Hedgehog. No prob. I gotchu. 👍”

So the default language is a card setting- you need to go to the info desk & ask them to switch it to English . Why they didn't do that when you first bought the card? Idk. 🤷‍♀️ But yeah, you need to try out the newer machines- So much nicer with all the functions you are pointed out!

Saddleback Caterpillar, Acharia stimulea. A reddish brown colored caterpillar covered in lighter colored short spines that look almost like fur. The middle of the insect is bright green and white, almost like the insect is wearing a saddle.

Nah we can do a lot better for a “rooster” invertebrate imo! I was thinking more like a Fulgorid Planthopper (aka Rooster-tailed cicada) or maybe a Crinoid sp. (aka feather stars) for more of the right look. 🐓🐔
