Science Edu👩🏻🔬~ Entomology🪲~ Nat.History🌱 Sci Tutor + FHEA @ HKU. HKBM volunteer. Fmr MPhil Cantab Zoology. Texan, Taiwanese & HK-er (She/Her/她). 📍Hong Kong now, moving to NYC for PhD🗽
Unfortunately, I'm not able to vote in my home state of TX anymore starting this year (NYC-bound for a PhD in Science Edu before Nov). But you best believe I'm getting as many ppl I know to register!💪 Texas is not a deep-red state, it's a voter suppressed one. Time to start flippin' tables.😉
** ⚠️ 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞! ** There are TONS on news articles about how TX laws led to mass invalid mail-in ballots last midterms (e.g. over 40% rejects in Houston's Harris County & 20% in San Antonio's Bexar County). See images alt text for e.g. - note voter info campaigns needed to counter SB1 bs.
^ If mailing your ballot, you MUST attach enough INTERNATIONAL postage (only free if sent in the US). <- do NOT recommend, processing = A LOT slower📬️ 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 9𝘽) 𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝘿𝙊 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 (𝙢𝙞𝙣 30 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚)‼️ Fill out the FWAB or Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (link in alt text)
For TX, you'll get a voter registration card in the physical mail (looks like below) - if you don't just check online to see that you are registered. Take a photo of the info & keep the card safe (remember the VUID, many come in handy later). You DO NOT send this back or need it with you to vote.
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 7) 𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙔𝙏𝙃𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 & 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙁𝙋𝘾𝘼. ✅️ I used to physically mail my reg. in, but switched to emailing a scan to the county clerk (much faster & easier). Note: You will need a digital cover sheet with this method! CANNOT email in final ballot, just FPCA reg. form.
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 6) 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙩, 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 & 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙁𝙋𝘾𝘼. 🖋️ Make a note of EXACTLY how you sign your name (TAKE A PHOTO even - seriously)! It will have to exactly match all other election stuff months later, save yourself the hassle/heartbreak. Know ppl who've had their vote not count cus of this 💔
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 4) 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. 👥 State dependent. For TX: - Intend to Return* = receive a ballot for federal, state & local elections (e.g. Governor, State Leg., School Board, etc). - Return is uncertain = receive ballot for federal elections ONLY *Don't need set date/plan, just intent.
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 2) 𝘾𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 (𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙥 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙥 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙪). 📍 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 3) 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 "𝙟𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣" 𝙖𝙠𝙖 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙮 /𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝 (𝙇𝘼) /𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 (𝘼𝙆).🏛️ You can use your state website for reference (but will often need a VPN as many screen out foreign IP - Opera browser has a free one!).
Note: Terrifying moment this time last year (Spring/Summer 2025) when many links like above became 404 errors or disappeared due to Trump executive orders - noticed when helping a friend😬 Good time to bring up Wayback Machine/Internet Archive as useful tools to pull up old info (see alt text)
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 1) 𝙂𝙤 𝙩𝙤 FVAP.gov 🌐 Click the big 🟥 "Request your ballot now" button. The form you will be filling out is called the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Its the same form to register & request your ballot. 📄
[Again, get this done as EARLY as possible - like months before voting day (mid August @ latest), TODAY is better! Speaking from experience, back-and-forth snail mail takes ages there are almost always little hiccups that slow things down. Again, YMMV depending on which state you vote in. 🙃]
Context: Texan born 'n raised, been voting from abroad since 2016. Cus despite challenges, it's just that freaking important. Otherwise, why would so many ppl inc. Paxton & my neighboring Rep. Chip Roy be pushing SAVE Act type BS to try & stop me? 🫠 (can kinda feel personal ngl... anyhoo)
Debated how much I should post about 🇺🇸 politics (esp as early career), but F- it! * 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 & 𝒗𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅🗳️ * (Yes 2026 Midterms in Nov but it takes MONTHS & need to RE-REGISTER after Jan 1st EVERY year you vote outside the US. ) START TODAY!👇️ [🧵 - 1/23]
Imma be honest, first reaction was to burst out laughing cus what do you MEAN even a RACIST AD has proper Chinese clerical script scrolls in the back, something Hollywood STILL CANNOT DO?! 🤣 Good post on it www.mcislanguages.com/mcis-blog/fo... COME ON million $$ movies, it's not that hard!
Context: Me summer 2018 vs Today-ish (same smile 😆)! Lil’ lady on the left is still trying to pick a uni major & has NO IDEA one elective course is about to change everything 😎 Like I always loved this stuff, but whaddya mean I can career-ify it?! 😮 (Tag me next time you say “hi” to the fly! 😜)
Fun Easter Egg for your next HKBM trip!🐣 See that big insect case when you enter? Look toward the bottom left, near glass sticker, between the stick insect legs for a green fly 🪰 Notice the Col. R. Wang from 3-X-2018 label? Yeah, that’s one I caught & pinned for my 1st ever insect collection. 🥹
-𝘌. 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘴/Mexican Bean Beetle (❌ lady bug spots) -𝘋𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢 (just listing 🟠 bugs now...) Dif answer each time, none close! 😬 ~~~ Look, if you think blurry bug looks like the lower left group: Congrats- You already beat AI at ID-ing by getting the correct insect order! 😎
BTW Google Lens "thinks"/wants to convince you it's a... - Tortoise beetle (❌ shape) - 𝘊. 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 / scale insect (❌ size & leaf place) - 𝘗. 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴/Surinam cockroach nymph ( ❌ hairy legs) - Genus 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘴 / Pill Cockroach (❌... everything? How did it get roly-poly roach?! 🫠) (cont.)
THIS!!📣 Don't trust AI for bug ID-ing, your brain is so, SO much more powerful than you give it credit for! 🧠 Quick eg: Friend sent me this SUPER blurry photo that AI tools can't make heads or tail out of. But I bet most bug ppl can ID its insect order in a min & HK bug ppl know what it! 😜 #Bugsky
Screenshot-ed the original post (had a feeling Springer might take it down after they started locking comments). Here it is in case people missed it. Books in question is still up at bit.ly/49ojUyg
Huh, not really in 🇹🇼! For my mom's gen, a bob even = default "school hair" & my GMa's gen all have "阿嬤" haircuts now (google it😅). Many TW 🚺 have short hair that would be "boy-ish" in the West. From Olympians like Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) to Vice Pres Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) to Singer Amber Kuo (郭采潔) etc.
My hastily doodled, pen-sketch attempt at “Mind Horse”. ✍️ No idea why horses 🐎 are so dang tricky but my brain just “gets” hedgehogs 🦔 ?? Like I’ve ridden horses many times before but never seen IRL nor lived anywhere hedgehogs are native. 🤣 Yet Brain like “Yup. Hedgehog. No prob. I gotchu. 👍”
Great ✍️ tutorial @ketrinadrawsalot.bsky.social ! Will try my hand at the butterfly and slug ones later! 👍 #Invertefest
More photos from other field days, part of the same project! Focused on riparian and aquatic invertebrate (e.g. caddisfly larvae, worms, crustaceans etc) collection. 🪱 (#InverteFest Day 5 <- yes I know I'm late but still 😜 )
For #InverteFest (Day 4-ish?): Some entomology field work photos from last year that I just never got around to posting ! 🪲🪳 🦋🦗🐝 (📍 Tung Chung River project with @hkbm.bsky.social )
So the default language is a card setting- you need to go to the info desk & ask them to switch it to English . Why they didn't do that when you first bought the card? Idk. 🤷♀️ But yeah, you need to try out the newer machines- So much nicer with all the functions you are pointed out!
Happy Year of the Horse everyone! 🐎🧧 新年快樂,心想事成!祝大家今年步步高陞,龍馬精神,萬馬奔騰,萬事如意! Tricky time finding a suitably "horse-y" invertebrate for y'all, but the Saddleback Catterpillar (𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘢 - photo by Mathew Orwat) is pretty close imo! 🏇 #LunarNewYear #YearoftheHorse #ChineseNewYear #春節 #Bugsky
Nah we can do a lot better for a “rooster” invertebrate imo! I was thinking more like a Fulgorid Planthopper (aka Rooster-tailed cicada) or maybe a Crinoid sp. (aka feather stars) for more of the right look. 🐓🐔
Post a photo of an animal that looks Gen-AI but is 100% real. Easy. Scorpionflies (Panorpidae family). (Pictured is a P. helena from Carderock, Maryland - taken by Judy Gallagher www.flickr.com/photos/52450... )
Continuing #Hymathon2025 w keynote 2 by Andrew Forbes @ Uni of Iowa! "For specialist insects, there is far more evidence supporting strong, ecological forms of reproductive isolation than post zygotic isolation" aka. Ecological factors (eg. where they live) > Offspring repo issues for speciation!
