About 30 years ago I came to the realization that the complexity of internal combustion engines (ICE) & their drive systems would lead car manufacturers to dump ICE for the ease of manufacturing EVs. Hybrids & plug-in hybrids, IMHO, weren't serious but just training wheels for getting to EVs. But 👀👁️
Policy responses to the energy shocks of the 2020s are different because green technologies have blossomed. China now offers the entire electric stack, from solar panels to electric cars, at affordable prices. Electrotech exports from China in March & April have been higher than in any month before.

I often hear that humans don't have that much impact on our environment when talking about climate change. It's a hoax!😏 The Dust Bowl was a clear example of humans causing an ecological disaster on a biblical scale. The dust clouds reached Washington, DC! I learned it was man-made only as an adult.

Not a small project. They installed solar canopies 5 meters above 9.26 sq. miles of crops. Panels tilt instructed by sensors monitoring water & sun intensity. Water needs dropped 30%. Heat damage fell 64%. Yields increased & they produce 500 megawatts of power from the exact same land growing food.
In sun damaged areas, solar panels actually help soil. But, we should put solar up high enough to allow farming & for grazing animals to move under them. Our priorities should be to put them over parking lots 1st, industrial/commercial roofs 2nd, & along the sides of highways & railroad tracks 3rd.
512,500 square miles of land are devoted to growing crops in the U.S., while around 17,500 to 21,250 sq. mi. is needed to meet all of the U.S.'s electricity needs with solar, 1/30th to 1/24th the space used for farming. Put the panels up high enough to farm under them & you don't have a conflict.
This doesn't count the slag fields at the coal mines, or the slag piles at the power plants, or the soot that covers everything nearby, not only our lungs. There is also the years between renewable's pollutants vs everyday for fossil fuels. And we are getting better everyday at recycling renewables.
NOT moving to wind, solar & batteries at this point is also just a bad choice. We are in the midst of climate change. Climate change will have an impact on our way of life. Just how much is up to us. Since wind, solar & batteries are the cheapest solution, that combination is the obvious choice.
The change happened 9 years ago. The trend towards EVs is growing crazy fast now. In April 2026, the combined average market share for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across the Nordic countries ([Norway, Denmark, Finland, & Sweden]) was approximately 67.3% of all new passenger car registrations.

India was thought to become “the next China” for coal demand. But the economics of energy have changed. India is industrialising when clean electricity is the cheapest option. India will peak at less than one-third of China’s coal peak of 2024. That makes a China-style coal boom far less likely.
