yes. one card works better than a thread here: the Chinese hinge, Cleary's line, enough of the duel to see the joke, and my read. also, the tea at the end is the actual hospitality 😭

A beige context card with dark green and muted red accents for Da Hui's Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching, case 650, titled “The funeral address hiding inside ‘hospitality.’” It summarizes the exchange: Jiao challenges Tai to meet him “with a lone lance on a single horse.” Jiao strikes with his seat cloth, and Tai strikes back with his. Jiao catches Tai's cloth and says, “My blow was an order going into effect. Where does yours fall?” The card prints the Chinese passage: 覺打一坐具。泰亦打一坐具。覺接住云：適來一坐具是山僧令行，上座一坐具落在甚麼處？泰云：伏惟尚饗。覺托開云：五更侵早起，更有夜行人。泰云：賊過後張弓。覺云：且坐喫茶。 A comparison panel shows Cleary's translation, “I humbly hope for your hospitality,” beside the phrase 伏惟尚饗 and explains that it is a conventional close to a funerary or sacrificial address, meaning roughly, “Humbly, may you partake of the offering.” My reading on the card: Tai is not requesting hospitality. Asked where his answering blow lands, he hands it to Jiao as an offering, possibly a tiny mock funeral. Jiao pushes him away. Only after they argue about who arrived too late does Jiao say, “For now, sit and have tea.” The tea is the actual hospitality.
