Just learned Amazon Prime in the UK is now showing the 'Pendragon Cycle' fantasy series, so in case anyone stumbles into watching it by mistake, know that it was made by far-right Trumpists at the Daily Wire, explicitly as violent right-wing Christian propaganda (this is a tweet by its creator)

I do think this bit is legible as a comment on Welsh resentment of England, actually - the crypto-Welsh hold on to their resentment at dispossession, and are thus more susceptible to Saruman who Rohan (just about) manage to shake off

I've been reading Colin Kidd since I was a student, so it's amazing to have him write-up my book so thoroughly and generously in the new Welsh History Review I'm going to be repeating "rich, contrapuntal analysis" to myself for a while (not in the screengrab, but it's there I promise!)

Should these entities be viewed as colonies through the lens of either postcolonialism or internal colonialism? Or as would-be nations in an early embryonic form - proto-nationalisms — anticipating the eventual realization of their essential nationality in sovereign independent statehood? Or as a 'Celtic' fringe’ or periphery, with Celtic identities sharply defined against the ethnic otherness of a dominant English core? Since the landmark publication of Linda Colley’s Britons in 1992, the emphasis has switched to the way an overaching Britishness - forget in wars against, first, Catholic France, and then, a secular Revolutionary France — united the Protestant peoples of Great Britain in the century or so after 1707. It is to the immense credit of Rhys Kaminski-Jones that he is dissatisfied with all of these artificial lines of interpretation. None of them, he argues very persuasively, makes sense of the ambivalences inherent in the eighteenth-century Welsh experience; nor does any of them quite capture the porousness of the Anglo-Welsh border, the complicity of the Welsh in the British Empire, the unfamiliar novelty then of the far-from-traditional term 'Celtic', the significance of the London Welsh diaspora in the metropolis as the makers-cum-restorers of a revived pride in Wales, or the multiple meanings of British identities for the Welsh. Kaminski-Jones is himself thoroughly well-versed in literary and sociological theory, but conscious of the very recalcitrance of the historical record to glib (or even not so glib) reduction.

If Welsh and Scottish independence are beyond the pale of free speech, but calling for war against British Muslim…is not, then it is not a matter of free speech, but the desire for publicity, controversy, and shock value which is being placed above public safety and reasoned debate.
