you can't convince me that a legit corinthian helmet with the appropriate amount of facial coverage (shocking: ancient people don't like getting shot in the face with arrows) wouldn't have looked cooler, even stylized "unrealistically." and look you could even still have your actors' faces showing!

update: yeah as expected a quick google scholar search reveals about a million people have published on this subject, with sometimes interestingly contradictory findings (linked article is concerned with specifically *academic* speech, but this bit from the abstract is of note)

This paper examines the sociolinguistic distribution of the question tags okay? and right? as well as the discourse markers you know, like, okay, and right in the academic speech of women and men of various disciplines in the lecture and seminar context. During the last thirty years, linguists have demonstrated considerable differences in male and female communicative behavior, as shown in features such as interruptions, backchanneling, silence, tag questions, and hedging devices including you know and the discourse marker like (Lakoff, 1973; Dubois & Crouch, 1975; Zimmermann & West, 1975; Holmes, 1986; Tottie, 1991). However, this research has also produced many contradictory and confusing findings. Östman (1981) supports Lakoff’s (1973) claim that women use you know more often than men do. Holmes (1986) and Erman (1992) could not identify any gender difference for the total numbers of the use of you know; however, they found functional differences in the use of you know by men and women. Concerning like, Dailey-O’Cain (2000) discusses the use of like and its perception as being typical of young women’s language, although Blyth et al. (1990) showed that young men use it more frequently. Dailey-O’Cain (2000) found a similar trend, however, her data was not statistically significant. As to okay, Heisler (1996) found okay being more prevalent among men in Montreal French. In their question tag function, okay and right have been linked to powerless (O’Barr & Atkins, 1980) and to women’s language, with some research finding women use more tag questions (Lakoff, 1973), fewer tag questions (Dubois & Crouch, 1975), or more tag questions of the facilitative kind, while men use more modal question tags (Holmes, 1984). Some research found no gender difference at all (Calnan & Davidson, 1998), and that the use of facilitative question tags is also tied to powerful conversational roles and not just gender (Cameron et al., 1988).

incidentally etymonline also suggests a possible alternate etymology, also influence of folk etymology! this would be a case of "analogy," a relatively common cause of atypical/non-phonological change (not dissimilar to "male/female," where a relationship between form & meaning is falsely assumed!)

There may have been a second word, combined through folk-etymology, that led to gravé's secondary sense of "juice of cooked meat." Perhaps Old French engravee "carved, sliced" or Old English greofa, an oil-pan (related to greaves, 1610s, "fibrous matter cooked out of animal fat.") The sense of broths or drippings appears to originally be of fishes, then soon extended to meat drippings or gelatin, which sense grows dominant in English from mid-15c, though still used most typically of fish or other seafood till 16c.

A claim that traces to Frédéric Godefroy in 19c. is that gravé is a non-word created as a persistent mistranscription of grané, but Godefroy adjusted the spellings of his citations to match his theory. Grané is a similar soup mixture with which gravé is indeed conflated in French manuscripts, but which does not appear in English cookery. It is usually supposed to be from Medieval Latin granatum "corned, grained."

hilariously, when i googled this joke to find the reference, like half the results are pictures of platner

meme from the TV show "community," season 2 episode 7, in which the joke is that the main characters failed to see the "signs" that the white guy they were hanging out with was a nazi. some of the clues are things he said that could plausibly be interpreted innocently, but when understood in the light of knowing he's a nazi it becomes clear that when he said them, he was dropping racist dogwhistles., In the first example he is mentioning "a place free from darkness" and in the second example he is alluding to people and saying "and some are just natural jumpers." But the last "clue" the main characters somehow overlooked is the guy standing shirtless with a full on swastika tattoo on his chest, giving the excuse "it's going to be a maze."

We are meant to be concerned with cis men's so-called "Ioneliness epidemic" and "lack of positive role models" because patriarchy needs us to affirm cis men's differentiation from the gender marginalized. They demand solutions to their loneliness that affirms their patriarchal power: "women should (be nicer to me, talk to me more, agree to have more sex with me, submit to being my state-assigned wife, etc.)" and when they decry a supposed lack of positive role models they invariably mean a lack of positive role models who are cis heterosexual men embodying hegemonic masculinity. What is at issue here is not that cis men are simply ignorant and lack emotional awareness or ability to feel and express their authentic selves, it's that they want to be able to do so and not risk their ability to access patriarchal power.
They believe that the solution must be their emotions taking up more space rather than in interrogating the methods for expressing them they find acceptable, which they avoid, and why. They want to be able to be an empowered patriarch in manly tears and they are terrified of looking like a fairy instead.

Cis men truly interested in being liberated in their emotions in ways that don't refer to patriarchal power see their loneliness as a struggle they share in common with women and queer people - a point of solidarity - rather than trying to differentiate themselves from maGes by articulating their feelings as more special or profound. They stop looking to other cis men for role models altogether. The serious ones find the courage to cry like a real fag! They're screaming like women, learning about their masculinity from trans people, and being devalued by other cis men as a result! It is simply impossible to reject patriarchal hegemony while still being fully accepted by it, and it is far past time that we stop pretending otherwise to coddle the endless sensitivities of cis men. The price (and gift) of authenticity is closer proximity to queerness. Cis men can take the risks inherent in rejecting the system that gives them their power, or continue to conform to its hegemony, but they cannot do both. If their store-bought masculinity chafes, let them remove it themselves. We need not take the time, energy, and resources to attempt to refit such fragile garments and there is no shortage of other options for them should they reallv care to look.

And let’s be real, Platner’s story here is a pretty common one. This and his other “scandals” sound a lot like other former Marines I know. So when Washington acts like it’s disqualifying, what they’re really saying is that ordinary people aren’t fit for higher office. People are done with the clean-cut types who’ve harbored ambitions for political office since they were on high school student council and have lived every waking moment accordingly. I call them smoothgroins: real-life barbie dolls with smooth plastic where a sexual organ should be. Think of the telegenic types like Gavin Newsom who never have a strand of hair out of place or much of anything to say (certainly not against the establishment). Think of Cory Booker, who at age 56 announced his first marriage, complete with a made-for-media rollout — clearly on the ridiculous assumption that people still give a shit about their presidential candidate having a typical family. Think of Pete Buttigieg, a politician so allergic to public displays of affection with his spouse that his own communications director publicly called him “the Tin Man.”
